Sports Report

In today's Sports Report, we catch up on the latest round of fixtures that took place midweek and at the weekend. The rounders season got underway for our Lower School girls and there was success in equestrianism for Year 10 pupil, Jack Dag. We also share some exciting GB Rowing news for two of our senior rowers.

Cricket

Girls’ 1st XI vs Leighton Park

On the Wednesday 25 April, Shiplake played their second cricket match of the season against Leighton Park School. Everyone played a great game, and the atmosphere was brilliant with Shiplake winning by just one run. Shiplake started fielding with some great bowling with both E Flower and A Flower taking a wicket. There was also great fielding from R Acton who was protecting the boundary and G Wyndham-Smith who was always running for balls going towards the boundaries. O Parkin had a brilliant match as wicket keeper, with brilliant catches seen.

When it came to batting, Shiplake saw some amazing batting from everyone, protecting the wicket from the strong balls from Leighton Park's bowling and lots of sneaky runs when the fielding team made mistakes. Our Coach's Player was very well-deserved and went to F Lenthall who made a total of 13 runs, caught out a player, and did an amazing throw while fielding to hit the wicket and get another player out. The Bowler of the Match was A Botterill and the Batter on the Match was G Wyndham-Smith who hit some very strong balls and protected the wicket. Everyone played so well, and it was a brilliant match.

Boys’ 1st XI vs Pangbourne

Shiplake opened the bowling with D Elliott and E Thomas. The pair bowled fantastic line and length leading to an early Pangbourne wicket. J Hinton, C Nash-Steer and G Blumfield continued to build the pressure with the ball and Pangbourne found themselves 107-9 after 20 overs. Shiplake started their run chase with a flurry of runs from L Crerar and E Thomas. Shiplake's W Forster and Z McConkey played sensibly and continued to score runs off the Pangbourne bowling. H Terrington hit the winning runs facing his first ball of the innings. A positive win for the 1st XI beating Pangbourne by 6 wickets.

Boys’ 1st XI vs UCS

A quick start from B Stokes and Z McConkey put Shiplake on the front foot with 20 runs after the first 3 overs. But Shiplake found themselves in a spot of bother - 48/6 after 9 overs. L Crerar and J Coe held the team together with a great partnership and L Crerar continued his good form frustrating the UCS bowlers and playing some lovely shots resulting in boundaries. J Coe rotated the strike brilliantly and Shiplake found themselves on 107 after 20 overs. Shiplake opened the bowling with D Elliott and J Cooper. Two wickets in the first over for D Elliott and some of the best catching you will see in schoolboy cricket from W Forster and L Crerar saw UCS on 0 runs for 2 wickets. J Cooper, C Nash-Steer and L Crerar bowled consistently and after 10 overs, UCS were on 30 runs. Shiplake continued to perform well in the field and UCS struggled to get near 107. Shiplake won by 35 runs.

Boys’ 2nd XI vs Wellington

Our first game of the season demonstrated lots of potential and has given us some things to look forward to. We batted first with H Simmons leading by example scoring our first few runs of the season. Unfortunately, we threw away a couple of wickets due to some impressive bowling from the opposition bowlers but soon found a bit of rhythm with F Partridge hitting a few boundaries. With a few more wickets down, and only 6 overs to go, C Kerrison and O Morris displayed a brilliant partnership accumulating almost half of the team’s runs by punishing the opposition spin bowlers. The two lads definitely turned the momentum in our favour and saved us from a disappointing innings. We reached a score of 98 runs which could’ve been a lot worse.

After a short interval, C Kerrison and H Simmons opened the bowling with the former bowling out the opening batsman in the first over! This gave the team lots of confidence for the next few overs where H Simmons took two impressive wickets in five balls shortly after. Some really promising spin bowling was displayed from O Morris as well as from O Beaney who put in a confident senior cricket debut. A decent partnership was formed by the number four and five batsmen for Wellington which saw them just about get over the line with only four balls left of the game. A very tight ending to an enjoyable opening game to the season.

2nd XI Cricket V Bloxham match report

The second game of the season didn’t go our way, but we took plenty from it. We batted first and our two openers, H Simmons and O Morris formed a great partnership of around 40 runs, with several boundaries hit in the opening few overs by both of them. Unfortunately, our momentum started to slow down, and we finished on a score of 85 runs. A slightly underwhelming, but certainly defendable score.

Once we started bowling, we quickly realised Bloxham had some very impressive batsman who we allowed into the game due to some sloppy bowling. Bloxham reached our score very comfortably, and although Bloxham were much more clinical than us, it was a good match, and we can take a lot from it.

Boys’ U15A vs UCS

This was very much the complete team performance form the U15As this weekend. H Terrington smashed 65 from 45 balls to get the team off to a flyer while all the other batsmen chipped in with a few runs to get the team to 132 for 4. Bowling wise, our ‘runs on the board’ gave us a chance to share the bowling round everyone. Everyone chipped in with some good economy rates and there were eight wickets shared around. A comfortable win by 32 runs!

Coach: Mr Bradley

Boys’ U14A v Dr Challoner's

Against a mature and experienced team, Shiplake were asked to bat first. After a patient start from openers J Andrews and L Waldegrave, Shiplake found it difficult to increase their run rate and finished with 80-6 off their 20 overs. Shiplake knew that they had to take early wickets and did so superbly. L Moss and J Andrews took two wickets each and Dr Challoner’s were 14-4. Unfortunately, Shiplake were not able to take another wicket as confident batting from their middle order saw the opposition reach the required total.

Coach: Mr Dix

Lower School vs Crosfields School

Our Lower School 1st XI won convincingly by 8 wickets and there was a strong performance from the 2nd XI too. The Lower School 2nd XI won the toss and elected to bowl first, dismissing the entire Crosfields batting order within 10 overs. The pick of the bowlers was L Ball taking 3 wickets for eight runs in his two overs. Everyone else had a bowl on the team with further wickets coming from O Thorpe, T Siveter and O Laventure.

Tasked with needing 58, our opening batters of R Collar and O Laventure rattled through these within six overs with the fall of just 1 wicket. R Collar finished on 21 not out, O Laventure 16, and E Morgan on 6 not out. This was a great overall performance, but tougher matches lay ahead.

Equestrianism

Year 10 pupil Jack Dag was out competing for Shiplake on Saturday 27 April in the Horse Events 90 Schools Equestrian Games one day event at Swalcliffe. He finished on a score of 38.5 putting him 10th in a class of over 30. Well done Jack!

Rounders

On Wednesday 24 April, our Lower School girls travelled to Furze Platt School for a rounders fixture. After the first innings, Shiplake were on 3.5 rounders with A De Felice, M Green and A English scoring half rounders each. Full rounders were scored by L Jones. The second innings saw Shiplake score a further 7.5 rounders with E Chester, A De Felice, M Green, M Smith, P Brown, L Hourd, A English, and T Lawrence. The final score was a convincing 11-2.5 victory for our girls.

Coach: Mrs Neill.

Rowing

We are delighted that two of our pupils - William Harper (Year 12) and Emily Downing (Year 13) - have been selected as part of a group of 31 U19 athletes to race at the Munich International Junior Regatta taking place at the Olympic Regatta Centre from 4-5 May. The event provides this group of talented U19 rowers, many of whom will be representing Great Britain for the first time, the opportunity to measure their standard against some of the leading nations in Europe.

Harrison has been selected as part of the men's sweep while Emily will be part of the women's sweep. Joining them out in Munich will be our Director of Rowing, Mr Currie, who will be the U19 Men's Sweep Discipline Lead. Good luck to them all and we look forward to seeing how they fare!
