Gregg Davies joined Shiplake College as Headmaster in 2004. He has enjoyed a hugely successful first decade at the helm, installing greater academic rigour whilst staying true to the College’s long-standing values. Not one to spend too long behind a desk, you will often see Gregg out and about around the College site, supporting the various daily goings on of our pupils.
Gregg was educated at Shrewsbury School and Kent School (USA), before reading Physiology at St Andrew’s University. Upon graduating, he began his teaching career at Haberdashers’ Aske’s School before moving to Fettes College in 1989. Initially appointed to teach Biology, Gregg soon became a Housemaster and is still in touch with many of the boys he guided through school. After a five year stint, Gregg was promoted to Deputy Headmaster and also served as Headmaster of the fledgling Fettes Preparatory School.
Whilst in Scotland, Gregg refereed rugby at an elite level, including several international and Heineken Cup fixtures. A keen sportsman himself, Gregg received honours in multiple sports during his own schooldays, and captained the St Andrew’s University Rugby Club. He also has a passion for rowing, which has intensified during his years by the river at Shiplake. In recent years he has established the Shiplake Vikings Rowing Club, to complement the term-time activities of the College Boat Club.
Life at Shiplake
When long-serving predecessor Nick Bevan retired in 2004, Shiplake’s governors were tasked with finding a fitting replacement. With his vast experience in a boarding environment, and exciting vision for the future, it was immediately apparent that Gregg was the Headmaster required to lead Shiplake into the future.
One of Gregg’s first steps at Shiplake was to introduce our iconic maroon, gold and black striped uniform. This makes Shiplake pupils instantly recognisable in the local community, on the river and on the sports field. Gregg has embraced modern culture and is an active user of social media. He has also inspired his colleagues to use the latest technology to facilitate innovative and engaging teaching.
Gregg’s wife Alison is also heavily involved in the life of the College, as an important member of our Learning Development Department. Their daughter, Anna, has grown-up by the river and was delighted to join our Sixth Form in September 2014. Munro and Perdi, the Davies’ Bearded Collies, are much loved members of the Shiplake family.
In addition to his responsibilities at Shiplake, Gregg has served as an ISI inspector since 2007, and more recently coordinated inspections on fellow boarding schools. His experience and reputation in education has also seen him elected onto the governing boards of local preparatory schools Crosfields, Davenies, Rupert House and Shiplake Primary School.
