Curtain Raises on GCSE Drama
DramaAcademic

Following on from the first group of GCSE Drama monologues (read more here) the Drama Department hosted another evening of mesmerising monologues and dynamic duologues. Once again the Tithe Barn was packed with family, friends and staff members, eager to see the hard work that the boys had put in.

Sam Ellis and Fergus Keogh opened the show with a hilarious duologue, Keith and Johnston. The piece was about two gentlemen, who lived together and were constantly pranking each other to make their lives more interesting. Matt Davies was next to the stage, performing as Francis from One Man, Two Guvnors, performing a hilarious skit about an out-of-work musician who gets hired to be ‘a bit of muscle’, and ends up rummaging through the bin for chips. Matty Fitzgerald then took to the spotlight, performing a monologue called Darkness. The piece was a hard-hitting one, and saw Matty’s character build up into a panic after being in an attack. Matt Greenham’s monologue was next, from the play Decade, a moving and poignant play commemorating the September 11 attacks. Alex Shean ended the evening’s pieces, with a monologue called Courage. The piece, performed brilliantly, was about a man who had left his girlfriend alone on the moors, and she was now missing.

The evening was very emotional, both hilarious at times and incredibly moving. Head of Drama Mrs Jenny Nunes commented: ‘these are exam pieces and it’s great to have the audience reaction. The boys acted very well; it is very tough to get up onstage alone and perform to a full-house, and no one let nerves get the better of them. Congratulations to all, and a big thank you to those that were involved behind the scenes, with costume, lighting and front-of-house duties.’
