Shiplake Digs Deep For Charities
CharitiesCommunity

In just two weeks, the pupils, teachers and staff at Shiplake College have raised over £1200 for various charities.

On Friday 29 September, Shiplake held it's Macmillan Coffee Morning, where over 250 cakes, brownies and cookies were sold for charitable donations.

Over 100 cups of coffee later, and the school had raised £385.50 for the amazing charity which funds doctors, nurses, counselors, advisors and volunteers to help those suffering with Cancer. So far, this years' World's Biggest Coffee Morning has raised close to £10 million!!

Soon after, on 6 October, the College UNPLUGGED to support Farms For City Children, an excellent charity which offers residential trips and visits to farms in the rural countryside. The charity aims to offer an escape to children living in busy cities, where they can experience and enjoy the great outdoors and everything it has to offer.

The lessons held on this day were done so without technologies such as computers, projectors and tablets, and instead the teachers' creativity was put to the test. Some Spanish lessons consisted of singing the alphabet in Spanish, while English Teacher Mr Alcock tweeted (at the end of the day):

Been teaching like its 1989, ‘cept no overhead proj. Whiteboard, notes, hand out of Larkin poem, detailed annotation & discussion. Loved it.

The UNPLUG and Mufti day raised £894.55 for Farms For Children. Just three days later on 9 October, Reverend Stephen Cousins and seven pupils delivered heaps of new, clean socks and bags upon bags of razors to the Christians In Reading Drop In Centre. Every pupil was asked to contribute to the donation, meaning a whopping 1215 pairs of socks and 1100 disposable razors were distributed to homeless people in Reading. The drop-in centre offers a space for homeless people to come and have a hot meal, shower and get some advice on how to turn their lives around. One of the biggest issues faced by homeless people is Non Freezing Cold Injuries, better known as Trench Foot. Because homeless people have very few facilities at their disposal, they find that their shoes and socks get wet in the rain, but do not have the opportunity to dry, so they get blisters and dead skin tissue which eventually falls off. With a hot shower and clean pair of socks to put on after, this risk is massively reduced.

In just two weeks, the pupils and staff at Shiplake College have raised a whopping £1280.05, 1100 disposable razors and 1215 pairs of socks for charities. A big well done to everyone who got involved and an even bigger thank you to everyone who donated.
