There may be fewer results to report on in today's Sports Report owing to the Exeat Weekend however we still saw many positive results in the games that took place last week. In particular, our senior basketball side was in full flow as were our rugby teams in their block fixtures against Cokethorpe School.
Basketball vs Oratory School
After a tough start to the season, our Shiplake U19 boys' basketball team were excited for what they hoped would be a competitive fixture at home against the Oratory School on Tuesday 19 November.
Shiplake commanded the first quarter, scoring into double digits before the opponents were able to reply. Fierce play continued into the second quarter and Shiplake held their modest lead, but Oratory started to close in as the third quarter progressed. Some nifty steals by F Baikie, authoritative blocks by W Nicholas, and a third quarter 3-point buzzer beater from A Mullens meant that Shiplake kept the lead to double digits going into the final quarter. At the buzzer, Shiplake were victorious 51-39.
C Zhou stood out as the star player of the match, scoring over 20 points and flying up and down the court with boundless energy. A Mullens sank no fewer than four 3-point field goals and distributed the ball well to his teammates. W Nicholas put in a shift under the basket, defending against the Oratory penetration and giving his all to grab each rebound. But most impressively, each member of the squad contributed to the win and played some great team basketball.

Girls’ 1st XI vs Holyport School
On Wednesday 21 November, the girls’ 1st XI played Holyport in their weekly league fixture. We had 1st push back and attacked strongly with good runs from A Godfrey, I Woodfrey, A O’Shea and F Dix. However, Holyport managed to turn the ball which led to them scoring during the 1st half. As the second half progressed, Holyport were awarded many short corners but they didn't score as there was strong defending from T Nicholson, S Bhambra, O Clarke and A Flower. However, at the final whistle, it was 2-0 to Holyport. I know the girls were disappointed after their strong performance at Friday Night Lights last week but hopefully with the last match of the season next week, we can end on a win! Player of the Match was A Godfrey; Players’ Player was I Woolfrey ,and Coach’s Player was S Bhambra.

Girl’ 2nd XI vs Leighton Park School
On Wednesday 20 November, the girls’ 2nd XI took on Leighton Park School in our last match of the season. The game started off strongly, with the attacking side keeping great possession of the ball and making some skilled passes. C Thomas and A Holden used effective technique to keep the ball away from Leighton Park’s players. Although the game started off strongly for Shiplake, due to increased pressure from Leighton Park, they managed to score three goals during the first half. During the second half, our defence faced multiple short corners, in which our routines had significantly improved since the start of the season with M Rider in particular making some strong passages of play within these short corners, and A Richardson preventing many balls from going into the goal. Although the girls used effective strategies during our short corner and long corner routines, Leighton Park scored two more goals during the last half of the game. Despite our unfortunate loss, we ended the season with significant improvement in our play compared to the beginning of the season, and we have all learned so much from all our matches and training sessions this term. Players of the Match went to C Thomas and R Dewar. Well done to all the girls for their hard work and effort this term and thank you to our coach Mrs Dunn for supporting us along the way!
