Budding journalists in Mr Miller’s Year 9 English class were recently given the opportunity to show off their creative writing talents by designing their own magazine. In groups of two or three, the pupils initially decided upon a theme or topic for their publication, before brainstorming ideas for articles which could be included.
Once the copy had been written, the editors sourced pictures to accompany the text and worked on attractive designs to make the magazines appealing to readers. With the winning incentive of mystery prizes and the promise of their magazine being printed on mass, there were many great articles produced.
The magazines were focussed on a variety of topics including ‘Right Place Right Time’ (travel), ‘The Network’ (gadgets and technology), ‘Fifa World Cup’ (football), ‘Compass Campus’ (travel) and Vapour (watersports).
The winning magazine was Sportsworld, produced by Els Frisby and Ollie Brown. The duo wrote excellent articles on a range of sports including cricket, rugby and football, focussing on topical events such as the world cup and Jonny Wilkinson’s retirement.
The stories were accurate, informative and interesting; although their optimism about England’s chances in Brazil unfortunately proved to be a little misguided! The boys were rewarded with Cadbury Heroes and Shiplake College keyrings. Their magazine is available to read below, or in reception where there are several copies lying around.
