Last year, the Music Department launched The Symphonic Challenge, giving staff the chance to learn a musical instrument they may otherwise not have access to. The 'Music for All' programme has been running successfully in the Lower School for many years, with Year 7 and 8 boys being given the opportunity to learn a new instrument. This now been extended to the Shiplake staff - both teachers and members of the support team.
Shiplake College holds seven basic principles, or The Shiplake Seven; to be curious, open-minded, motivated, reflective, determined, creative and independent. So what better way to uphold these principles than by learning a musical instrument alongside our pupils? From the Clarinet to the Cello and the Flute to the French Horn, the variety creates a veritable cacophony of amateur excitement!
Music teacher Mr Jones said:
“As well as embracing the Headmaster’s No Risk, No Reward mantra, at the start of every year we encourage all pupils to display the characteristics of The Shiplake Seven. Over twenty colleagues have taken the opportunity to learn an orchestral instrument for the year with one of our dedicated team of visiting musicians. Not only will the participants work towards their Grade 1 but it will also be a great experience for the pupils to learn alongside their teachers and embody The Shiplake Seven.”
Both pupils and staff will work towards a performance at the Shiplake Summer Concert and this year they may share the stage with the Band of the Household Cavalry.
Earlier on in the year the Music Department received a donation of £300 for the purchase of an Electric Double Bass. The Double Bass itself stands at nearly two metres tall on its stand and is made of Maple, Spruce and Ebony. Despite its size, it is lightweight and aesthetically beautiful! The donation from the grandmother of Old Viking was kindly accepted and on behalf of the Music Department and the rest of the School, we would like to thank the donor.
