As a pre-exeat treat, we sat down and had A Conversation With... Mr John Ralfs, our exceptionally hard working Bursar. John joined Shiplake College in early 2017. Before joining the College, he had a very varied career. From Financial Controller to part of a team that took a hi-tech company onto AIM via reverse acquisition, he's done it all! He then spent five years as the Group FC of a healthcare company. The next five years were spent as the Finance Director of a Multi-Academy Trust. He played a big part in growing the group from one school to three during his time there and also delivered an £8 million primary school build.
What does your average day entail?
There is no average day for a Bursar, it could be anything! From working on building projects and negotiating supplier contracts to working on forecasts. But whatever it is, the aim is usually the same – improving the College where possible and making our funds go further.
What do you most enjoy about working at Shiplake?
The staff. It is really great to see how much the staff, especially the teachers, enjoy their roles. I believe that this helps them to build great relationships with the pupils and helps the pupils to make the most of their time at the College.
What are the most challenging aspects of your job?
The listed buildings are beautiful and it is a pleasure to be a part of maintaining them for future generations, but they are often challenging. From organising renovations on these listed buildings to proposed developments, there are so many challenges to face. I'm lucky to work with fantastic Maintenance and Grounds teams who make these jobs possible.
What do you enjoy doing outside of school?
Family time more than anything, but I also enjoy sport and building things. Earlier this year, I took part in the men's 4x50 freestyle at the European Masters Championship in Slovenia and that was an incredible experience. Having just finished a handmade kitchen I’m now moving on to a tree house with zip line for my five-year-old.
What are you most looking forward to in Shiplake’s future?
Commencing the build of the Multi Activity Centre, I’m really happy with the plans and it is going to look fantastic. Other than that, my lips are sealed!
What are the most common misconceptions of your job?
That being an accountant is boring! In my current role, I don't think I've had a single boring or easy day, it's far more varied than you might think.
What does the future hold for John Ralfs?
I'm really hoping to retire early so that I can spend more of my time in my workshop and watching my family grow and succeed in whatever they aim to achieve.
