In this week's 'Conversation with...' we caught up with the newest member of our music department, Mr Elliott, who joined us in September after graduating from Oxford Brookes University with a degree in Music early this year.
What does a day in the life of Mr Elliott entail?
My day normally begins by having a listen to some of Spotify’s recommended songs to find ideas for the Shiplake Collective’s next hit. This will be followed by some music arranging before getting started on the first lessons of the day. After lessons have finished, I’ll head to the river. Whether that’s to coach the Year 9 rowing team or to train myself, I spend the majority of my free time located near a body of water. It’s then back home to eat dinner with my girlfriend and catch up on the latest TV show.
What made you want to get into music?
I started learning piano from a young age but never really clicked with it. But when I got to Year 7 I took up the saxophone and have loved it ever since. Growing up I spent a lot of time around my Grandmother who was also a music teacher. I always loved looking through her vinyl collection of Jazz Artists such as Charlie Parker, Louis Armstrong and John Coltrane, who I guess inspired me even when I didn’t realise I was being inspired.
What's been your career path up until now?
I graduated from Oxford Brookes University last year studying Music with a special focus on film composition. I’ve always enjoyed inspiring people to do the best they can and learn new skills. After some work experience I undertook here at Shiplake College, I realised this career path was for me.
You joined Shiplake College this year, what were you first impressions?
I instantly took a liking to what Shiplake is trying to do. I’ve always been a strong believer that polite and well-mannered people do very well later in life and that’s exactly what Shiplake is achieving. I was very impressed with how supportive the staff common room is and how lovely everyone on site is, it helped me to settle in straight away.
We've heard that you love to row, tell us more about what kind of things you have done in the world of rowing?
I began rowing at the age of 11 at Molesey Boat Club, being coached by some of the top athletes in the world, and I stayed there throughout my entire junior career. I then went to Oxford Brookes University, where I was able to compete with some of the best athletes in the country. This has given me a real sense of maturity in everyday life and not just my rowing. I’ve competed abroad at Ghent Regatta where I won medals racing in the U23 crews, I’ve also raced at Henley Royal Regatta multiple times, usually losing to the winners (Washington University) but am still chasing for that win!
What do you like to do in your spare time?
My spare time is mostly taken up with arranging new pieces for the Shiplake Collective. I’ve always been a part of a band and thoroughly enjoy leading one! I spend the rest of my time out on the river in Marlow or in the gym training for the next competition.
What is your favourite genre of music, composer/band and song?
My favourite genre is Funk/Disco/Jazz but I don’t have a specific composer or band as there are so many I listen to. At the moment my favourite song to listen to is Somebody Else’s Guy by Jocelyn Brown (skip to 0:53) which was actually suggested to me by one of my BTEC students! I’ve already arranged it for the Spring Concert for you to enjoy!
What does the future hold for Mr Elliott?
Over the next few years I would love to continue to teach and inspire new pupils to create a love for music like I have. I would also love to go and visit more places around the world and also get a dog with my girlfriend to fill up the rest of my time!
