Congratulations to Year 12 pupil, Scarlett Maleham who was the fastest senior swimmer in the Schools' Open Water Swimming Cup at the SELKIE Henley Classic Swim on 27 June.

Scarlett was one of five pupils from Shiplake College who took part in the event and we are very proud of all of them for taking on the 2.1km endurance upstream swimming challenge in the Thames.

Mr Tom Armstrong runs the open water swimming co-curricular activity at the College and arranged for the swimmers to take part.

He said: ”It was great to be able to get a group of students participating in the Henley Classic Swim again this year, and to be able to run the open water swimming activity during the summer term.

“We had five swimmers who took part, with Year 11 students Luke Byca, Ned Floyd and Fred Fox swimming their second Henley Classic, having represented the school for the first time as Year 9 pupils.

“In addition, Year 11 student Tom Madden did very well, having only started open water swimming this year and having never swum the full 2.1km distance - or in a river - until the event!

“The standout performer was Scarlett Maleham who did fantastically well! She was not only the fastest swimmer in her category (Senior Year 11-13) in the Schools' Cup event (both boys and girls) but also the 11th fastest female (out of 319) and the 29th quickest swimmer overall (out of 638 competitors) in a time of 36:29. This is an excellent result!

“I am very proud of all five pupils and hope that their rowing commitments will allow them to swim again next year and that we can get a few more boys and girls to join them! Thanks to Mr Hugh Mackworth-Praed for his help on the day and to him and Mr George Miller for joining us for some training swims during the term.”

Well done to Mr Mackworth-Praed for completing his swim in a time of 37:05, coming 35th overall all out of the 638 competitors.
