Before half term Shiplake pupils in their PSHEE lessons spent some time reflecting on and discussing LGBT History Month, which took place from 1 to 28 February.

LGBT History Month is celebrated in February every year to coincide with the 2003 abolition of Section 28 which was brought in to prohibit the promotion of homosexuality. This year also marks the 50th anniversary of the very first Pride March in the UK in 1972.

Some of the questions raised in lessons included; what makes a good relationship? Does it matter who you love? Does it matter who you want to be? Should we be happy if our friends are happy with who they love or who they want to be? Does this take courage to be yourself?

In Art Club, Years 7 and 8 created artwork which explore these questions. They have been copied onto acetate and put up in the windows of the stairwell of the John Turner building with beautiful colours streaming in when they are hit by the sun.

Mrs Sarah Krause, Head of PSHEE, said: "We have had some brilliant conversations around LGBT History Month and have invited pupils to ask lots of questions about relationships and being yourself.

"I have been really impressed with the art work produced by the Lower School, which now sits in pride of place in the John Turner building."
