The month of October brings with it the celebration of ‘Black History Month’. This is an important time to recognise, remember and celebrate the work of black humanitarians both within the UK and the wider world. In this morning's Whole School Assembly, Mr Andrew Jones announced the winner of the competition to design a poster in celebration of Black History Month, on the theme of Actions Not Words. There was a large number of entries, with four entries given Highly Commended status. Below is Mr Jones's address:
"In the words of the late Queen Elizabeth; ‘When peace comes, remember it will be for us, the children of today, to make the world of tomorrow a better and happier place.’
Never have such words rung true. We gather today as equals, in a school that places individuality and inclusivity at its very heart. A kind school, where we are encouraged and celebrated to shine as our true selves. Imagine for moment a world where that was and indeed still, is not the case.
During the month of October, we come together to celebrate Black History Month. To remember the past and put the lessons that we have learnt into practice. This year the theme is ‘action not words’. It is not enough for us to talk of equality, instead we must make it centre of our personal core values.
A few weeks ago, the Equality and Diversity team challenged you to create a piece of artwork to help our community celebrate Black History Month. This work had to be centred around the theme ‘action not words’ and contain three colours; Black symbolic of race, Red symbolic of the struggle and blood shed in the fight for equality; and Green symbolic of new growth.
We received many entries and thank each and everyone of you who entered for your hard work and true embodiment of Shiplake’s core values.
The winning artwork has been framed and will be displayed around the College throughout the month of October. Our thanks to Mrs Lovelock for her help with this.
