On Tuesday 7 March, our Year 13 sociology pupils travelled to London for a series of exhibitions at the Imperial War Museum, and some sightseeing on the London Eye. The following is a writeup of the trip, courtesy of Head of Sociology, Ms Kate Magee.
'Our sociology A Level students enjoyed a visit to the Imperial War Musem in London, where they took in exhibitions on the Holocaust and war games, before they took a trip on the London Eye. They were accompanied by their teachers, Ms Kate Magee and Mr Kade Heaney, and left school in the afternoon in order to avoid disrupting lessons.
At the Imperial War Museum, the pupils took in the Holocaust Exhibition which Harry Hickman described as, ‘very moving; I didn’t realise how many millions of people died and how many of those were children.’
Additionally at the museum, they visited the War Games Interactive Exhibition which demonstrated to the pupils how many classic computer games, such as Call of Duty, were based on real battles. It also explained why so many people enjoy playing them.
Annabelle Townsend, who plans to study psychology at university, said ‘it was interesting to learn that in the gaming world, we love conflict and this is something war games guarantee, hence why they are so addictive.’
After visiting the Imperial War Museum, the pupils went to the London Eye and had a bird’s eye view of the capital at twilight. They got to experience an amazing sunset and saw the impressive riverside buildings light up against the night sky. After a relaxing dinner at a South Bank restaurant, the pupils headed over the Golden Jubilee footbridge, taking in London and the Thames by night, before catching the train back to Shiplake.
The Year 13 students who went on the trip were Rudi O’Keefe, Taj Angell, O Lewis, Daniel Henson, M Jackson, Saffron Goggins, Hope Lane, Annabelle Townsend and Harry Hickman.'
