Combined Cadet Force (CCF)

The Combined Cadet Force (CCF) at Shiplake comprises all three service sections; Army, Navy and Royal Air Force. The aim of the youth organisation, sponsored by the Ministry of Defence, is to "provide a disciplined organisation in a school so that pupils may develop powers of leadership by means of training to promote the qualities of responsibility, self-reliance, resourcefulness, endurance and perseverance."

Army cadets make use of the local military training areas, RAF cadets attend flying days at nearby RAF Benson, while the Navy section make good use of the River Thames and often complete sailing drills at Reading Sailing Club, which the College has an affiliated membership with.

Timetable

CCF is compulsory for Year 10, and for Year 9s from the Spring Term (every other week on Mondays for 1 hour and 25 minutes). It is optional for Years 11-13. Years 10-13 have their CCF training on Tuesday afternoons for 1 hour.

Army Section (Years 9-13)

The Army section of the Combined Cadet Force (CCF) focuses on building military skills, discipline, leadership, and teamwork. Cadets participate in fieldcraft, navigation, and military drills, enhancing their resilience and understanding of the Army's core values. Physical fitness is also an important component, and cadets learn how to apply these skills in various environments.

The Army section also offers the opportunity to attend a summer camp at Longmoor Training Camp, where cadets get to put all their learning into practice.

Navy Section (Years 9-13)

The Navy section provides cadets with a chance to explore water-based activities and develop seamanship skills. Training includes navigation, maritime safety, and practical experience in sailing and powerboating. Cadets build teamwork through group activities and can apply their skills on waterborne exercises.

In addition to Navy cadets can apply for specialised courses such as powerboating and sailing. These opportunities not only enhance their technical skills but also foster leadership in challenging, real-world environments.

Royal Air Force Section (Years 9-13)

The RAF section introduces cadets to the fundamentals of aviation, including flight simulations, aircraft maintenance, and navigation. Cadets develop leadership skills while learning how to apply their knowledge in aviation-related scenarios.

RAF cadets are also entitled to participate in external courses such as radio and cyber.

Shared Opportunities for All Cadets (Years 9-13)

All cadets, regardless of their section, have access to a variety of shared experiences that promote teamwork, personal growth, and skill development. Capel Curig in Wales offers an adventurous training week for all cadets, where they can bond and take on outdoor challenges together.

In addition, all cadets are invited to attend the Christmas Awards/Speakers Dinner, where they can celebrate their accomplishments and hear inspiring talks. The summer barbecue provides another opportunity for cadets from all sections to gather and reflect on their experiences. Furthermore, every cadet will participate in the Headmaster’s Parade, a formal event showcasing the skills and achievements of CCF cadets across all sections.

All cadets are also entitled to apply for a wide range of specialised courses, such as powerboat training, sailing, paddle sports, and climbing, ensuring that everyone can explore their interests and develop new skills.
