GCSE and Sixth Form psychology and biology students spent a fantastic day learning all about the brain last week with Dr Guy Sutton, Director of Medical Biology Interactive at the University of Nottingham School of Medicine.
The morning started off looking at basic brain anatomy, including the cortical and subcortical regions, nerve cells and synapses. They also explored the effects of ketamine and cannabis on the brain as well as the effects of sleep, child abuse and pornography.
After break Dr Sutton talked about different methods for exploring the brain. They looked at damaged brains and whether there is such a thing as a criminal brain. It was then onto the shattered mind to find out more about schizophrenia.
The day ended with a dissection of a sheep’s brain after a discussion on how much brain we can lose to still function. Students were encouraged to take part and have a close look at the sheep’s brain and the parts of it after dissection.
Mr Sam Shaw, Head of Psychology, said: "Brain Day is the perfect experience for our Psychology and Biology students to get a taste of university life, or it would be if any of my lecturers had been half as engaging!"
