In this week's 'A Conversation With...' we caught up with psychology and criminology teacher, Miss Jess Pye. Miss Pye loves teaching these subjects as they really help us to understand human behaviour and how it impacts society. In her spare time, she enjoys walking her Border Terrier puppy and running.

How long have you been at Shiplake and what is your role(s)?

I joined Shiplake College in September. I teach psychology and criminology and I help with girls’ sport.

Where were you before coming to Shiplake?

Prior to Shiplake I worked at LVS Ascot for five years. I taught psychology, helped with girls’ sport and was an assistant housemistress of a day house.

What would you say is the best thing about Shiplake?

Definitely the warm and welcoming community. Both staff and pupils exude positivity and enjoy the many opportunities available to them.

What does a normal day look like for you?

I start the day off with my Year 9 tutor group each morning. They are a brilliant and enthusiastic group of boys who (I don’t like to boast) recently won the overall Skipwith tutor challenges last term. Haribo and chocolate are brilliant incentives.

My timetable consists of Year 10, 12 and 13 psychology and Year 12 criminology. After lessons, I help with girls' sport. It is always great to see the students in a different setting to the classroom environment. After this, I will often see pupils for academic support or revision.

Why is psychology such an important subject?

Psychology is an important subject because it concerns all aspects of human behaviour and can be applied frequently to our daily lives. For example, we can use psychology to help us understand peoples’ perceptions and responses to the COVID-19 pandemic. More specifically, psychology can help us understand the complex social behaviour associated with the pandemic, the mental health issues that arose as a result of the lockdowns and even the change in our sleep patterns and dreams due to lockdown. Having a strong understanding of human behaviour can lead to positive practical implications for society.

What inspired you to become a teacher?

I had an amazing teacher at school called Mrs Bishopp. She taught me A level Psychology and PE. I was always inspired by her positive attitude and zest for teaching. We are still in contact today and she continues to have a strong influence on my teaching.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

I enjoy spending time with my family and friends. I also love running, going to the gym and walking my seven-month-old border terrier.

What are you looking forward to in the summer when lockdown restrictions are fully lifted?

I can’t wait to book a holiday! I want to spend some time in the sunshine by the sea. I am also looking forward to attending the many weddings that have had to be postponed due to Covid.

What does the future hold for Miss Pye?

I am keen to complete a masters in the near future.
