An Exemplary Winner!
Scholarships

The theme of this year's Exemplum Docet Prize was 'Hero'. All pupils were encouraged to submit an entry in a style that worked for them and there were so many outstanding entries exhibiting a stark range of talents and interests, from paintings to music compositions to speeches and even a radio play on Nelson Mandela!

Master of Scholars, Mr Player, writes:

‘It was hugely exciting to go through so many entries on such a diverse mix of heroes from Rory Stewart’s superb canvas of Muhammad Ali standing with champions aplomb, Ben Stokes’ presentation on key sport psychologists, and Sena Huges’ stirring rendition of James Bond tunes. It was so much fun going through so many inspired entries.

Out of the agony of choosing a winner, three entries stood out. Art Scholar Mo Britton completed an art piece inspired by Monet in which he researched the legendary impressionist’s immortal water lilies and then submitted his own interpretation based on his own back garden. This was accompanied with detailed information on the artist and the process. We were so impressed with the dexterity of colour and meticulous technique.

Next was Academic Scholar and general Renaissance individual Johnny Pearson in Year 9 who submitted a fantastic musical entry on the electric guitar based on his hero Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin. He submitted a sublime piece with Page's 'Since I've Been Loving You' as backing, along with an essay on what made Page special. It was a brilliant entry, played with incredible technical ability and face-melting ferocity!

However, there could only be one winner with the 2024 Exemplum Docet Prize going to Academic Scholar Luke Leamon in Year 9. Luke’s entry was also a musical composition on guitar which combined erudition with creative flair. His hero was Stevie Ray Vaughan and as explained in Luke’s accompanying essay, Stevie Ray Vaughan hailed from Austin TX, like Luke. Luke's outstanding entry was in the same style as Texas blues, with the chord progression of the twelve-bar blues. The result was a beautifully complex piece, passionate and dynamic and carrying all the warmth and heart of the American South. It was simply a pleasure to listen to and was a deserved winner from one of Shiplake College's absolute super stars!

Well done to Luke Leamon and thank you to all who entered. We can't wait for next year!’

We hope you enjoy listening to Luke’s winning entry.
