The Owl Tie is one of the most impressive awards a pupil at Shiplake can receive. Very few are awarded each year, as to receive one a pupil has to show outstanding contributions in not just one, but many areas of College life. Gus McCulloch and Tom Arnold were well deserved Owl Tie recipients in Whole School Chapel Services last term.

This year, Tom has served as Head of College while Gus had undertaken the role of Head Chapel Warden. The two boys are also keen rowers, with Tom set to row in the Shiplake College 1st VIII at Henley Royal Regatta this summer. Tom also sings and plays the saxophone in a number of the College’s music ensembles. By demonstrating such an impressive attitude and application across all their academic and co-curricular endeavours, the boys are undoubtedly inspirational role models for other pupils across the College.

The Headmaster was full of praise for the two prefects, describing them as ‘great role models at the heart of Shiplake life, displaying humility and selflessness in everything they do’.

Gus described receiving the Owl Tie as a ‘real honour’, admitting he felt quite emotional during the service. ‘I have thoroughly enjoyed everything here at Shiplake, getting the opportunity to try so many different activities.’

Congratulations to both boys on their well-deserved award. Their achievements will be further celebrated at the Prize Giving ceremony on Wednesday 25 June.
