We are proud to announce that Deputy Head Academic, Ian Munro, has been appointed as the headteacher of Kelvinside Academy, a leading HMC independent school of 600 girls and boys aged 3-18 based in Glasgow. Mr Munro will be taking up the position of Rector, a title often used by schools in Scotland, from April 2016.

Mr Munro joined Shiplake College in September 2013, having previously taught at Heriot’s and Gordonstoun in Scotland. During his highly productive tenure he has further helped Headmaster, Gregg Davies, to build up the reputation of Shiplake as a centre for innovative teaching and learning, increasing the culture of high expectations of both staff and pupils. Other achievements include empowering the Heads of Department, not least by reviewing the way teaching and learning is monitored, and introducing the new reporting system on pupils’ progress. Mr Munro was integral to implementing the changes to the new Shape of the Week and pioneered the recent introduction of the Shiplake Seven, a framework for fostering and developing key habits of mind in our pupils. In addition, he led the College through the full ISI inspection in April, which saw Shiplake graded as excellent across all nine aspects of school life. Away from the classroom, Mr Munro has played a fundamental role in developing girls’ rowing at the College.

This appointment is the fifth promotion to headship of Shiplake staff in as many years, the most recent being Mr Rob Jones (Deputy Head), who started his role as Headmaster of HMC school Rendcomb College in September. Mr Munro says: “I am looking forward to the challenge that my new role of head will present but I will be very sorry to leave Shiplake. It has been a privilege to be part of such an exciting and progressive time at the College, which has seen the school achieve its best ever GCSE and A Level results over the last two years.”

Mr Davies leads the congratulations from all of us at the College and thanks Mr Munro for his contribution to the development of Shiplake College. “Achieving a headship at this early stage in his career is an impressive and rarely achieved feat, but one which reflects Mr Munro’s ambition, leadership and love of learning. I wish Ian and his wife Catherine well for the future and am certain that he will lead Kelvinside to achieve many great things. I am confident that we will appoint a high-calibre candidate to succeed Mr Munro, and that the drive to move Shiplake forward will continue.”
