On Tuesday 26th June, 13 students from Year 9 attended the finals of the Open School Coding Contest at the University of Surrey in Guildford.

Year 9 had been working in lessons on a group project to design, create and test a game or an app for a charity of their choice which could be used to inform or raise awareness of the charities’ goals. Four teams were chosen to represent the school based on both the quality of their game and of their documentation for it.

On the day they had the opportunity to view and critique the games/apps of the other contestants as well as to have a lecture from a member of the university computing department and a question and answer session with members of the Red Hat team, who were sponsoring the event.

Whilst Shiplake didn’t win any prizes, the groups received compliments form the judges and from the other contestants with regards to their games and ideas.

Oliver Hart made this game for the Churches in Reading Drop in Centre, a charity often supported by the School and Rev'd Stephen Cousins.
