Last Monday (20 June), three of our Year 12 Computer Science students, Fergus Heggie, James Perry and Nikita Saitov took part in the final judging stage of the Teen Tech Awards, at the Institution of Engineering and Technology in London.
The aim of this prestigious competition is to encourage students to apply their technical knowledge to help solve a real world problem. There are 15 categories, which fall into either the Innovation, Skills or Research sections. All submitted projects receive feedback and a bronze, silver or gold award and every year the best projects go forward to the TeenTech Awards Final for judging and the winners receive a cash prize. For the Shiplake team to qualify for the finals is a great achievement.
The boys were finalists in the Data Science Category. They used education data sets to make suggested improvements to the College's system. Using the Python coding language, they were able to make graphical displays of the data set and show what would benefit students' grades.
The Awards Finals itself involved demonstrating their solution, presenting it to a board of expert judges and taking some very searching questions from them.
Mrs Anna Morgan, Computer Science Teacher, said: "Fergus, James and Nikita delivered a proficient and polished presentation, they fielded the judges’ questions with confidence and demonstrated some impressive subject knowledge. I was hugely proud and impressed by their poise and professionalism!"
The team were presented with a fantastic second place in the Data Science category and received the award for ‘Best Team Work’.
Congratulations to the whole team.
