For the fourth time in five years, Shiplake College is embarking on the #SocialAdvent Challenge.

#SocialAdvent is a festive social media challenge set by Interactive Schools, a Marketing Agency specialising in independent education. On each day, schools involved with #SocialAdvent are given a different challenge, utilising contemporary media and apps and a good sense of humour. Each year, the first challenge is a ‘message from the Head’, with which our own Head, Mr Davies, is enthusiastically involved. Previously, Mr Davies has delivered his address from beside the fireplace of the Senior Common Room, and read a jolly, festive poem. This year, the Marketing Department have used modern technology and turned Mr Davies into an Animoji, an animated emoji to deliver his last Christmas message as Shiplake’s Headmaster.

Day three saw some exceptionally impressive flossing by a mix of senior rowers who took to the River Thames in their eight, stood up and performed the very well-coordinated dance. Further to this, Coach Mr Lee couldn’t help but get involved as he can be seen flossing alongside the pupils in a launch.

Today, the Marketing Department was challenged to place an A.R. Christmas tree somewhere on-site of the School. A.R. is short for augmented reality and is the technology that drives Pokemon Go. In essence, it allows you to alter reality through a smart-phone screen or VR Headset, and can allow you to place, move and manipulate virtual objects in the real world. Shiplake’s A.R. tree was placed on the terrace of Skipwith House, arguably the most quintessentially ‘Shiplake’ spot on site.

Upcoming challenges include the cover of a popular Christmas song, a time-lapse video of our fabulous (real) Christmas tree and sharing images of our Christmas jumper day! Keep an eye on our Twitter page for our #SocialAdvent posts.
