The wet weather started to clear, which enabled our cricket teams to play their last few matches of the season. The boat club also attended a local side by side river regatta in Reading, and came away with a number of wins.

U17 Cricket v Eton College - Fourth round of the English National Schools Cup

After having a good win against Malbrough away, Shiplake were looking to continue their winning streak in the National Cup against Eton. After winning the toss Shiplake elected to bat. With wet conditions they were off to a good start with J Angell and O Stalder creating a solid opening partnership of 67. J Angell getting 41 and O Stalder scoring 26. With some accurate bowling from Eton, Shiplake were soon to be 4 down in quick succession. But after some stable batting from C Creighton and A Bartlett, Shiplake ended their innings with a score of 132 for 9. Continuing the good performance with the bat, Shiplake were looking to restrict Eton from as many runs as possible with the ball. C Creighton and A Bartlett both getting wickets in their first over Shiplake looked like getting another victory.

However after some excellent batting from Eton’s 3 and 4 they got the total with a couple of overs to spare.

Boat Club race at Reading Amateur Regatta

The boat club attended Reading Amateur Regatta last weekend, with traditional side by side river racing involved. The club achieved four wins and saw the new 2nd 8+, who are looking to qualify for the Temple Challenge Cup at Henley Royal Regatta, make their first race debut.

The Temple 8+ had an exciting race against The Latymer School’s 1st 8+, which was a huge achievement for them to beat a 1st 8+ crew. They went into the semi-finals with determination, but lost to Abingdon’s 1st 8+ by a length. This was a great performance by the 8+ and a good starting platform for the qualifiers project they have ahead of them.

The J16 4+ took a strong win against Monmouth School. This was an excellent result for the 4+ as they are trialling for GB crew in the match against France. It was also good side by side race experience as they make up half of the new Temple 8+.

The J15’s entered a 4+ and beat the Oratory School convincingly in their straight final. They set an extremely good time, that was not very far off the J16 4+, which shows good promise for the future.

This was the J14’s first river side by side event, after securing a silver medal at National Schools Regatta in an octuplet, the J14A boat split into smaller boats of two quads. The J14B 4x+ raced Hampton to make the final and the J14A 4x- beat Wallingford to make the final. The J14 4x- was an all Shiplake final where the A quad, took the win by a few lengths, setting a very fast time.

The 14B 8x+ raced also against Wallingford, in a straight final, and secured a win in their event by over two lengths.

All crews look to this weekend where seniors will be racing at Marlow Regatta and juniors will be competing in Basher at Dorney Lake.

O Morgan will also be racing this weekend in a composite double at Henley Womens Regatta.

1st XI Cricket v Oratory School

Shiplake were in a very strong position and looking likely to win, with C Creighton taking 5 wickets, but with too much rain, the match was abandoned by the umpires as they felt it was too wet and that there were health and safety issues.

U15A Cricket v Oratory School

On Wednesday the 12 of June Shiplake U15 played the Oratory School. The weather was poor with it raining throughout the whole game. Shiplake won the toss and decided to bat on a wet pitch. J Shortland took an early wicket to put the pressure on Oratory’s fielding. However, the Oratory recovered well before an excellent spell from M Connolly, keeping runs really tight by going at less than 3s an over. We then kept the Oratory restricted with tight fielding. The Oratory ended up with 122 runs after 20 overs. Shiplake started strong with O Stalder and J Shortland both getting 30. The rain kept falling throughout the second innings, which included good innings from H Kunzig to get us the win against the Oratory.
