As part of the Year 13 Enrichment Programme ‘ShipShape’ to prepare students for life outside of Shiplake, our Master of Scholars Mr Grant Woolner has developed Shiplake’s own ‘TED talks’, called ShiplEd Talks.
Before lockdown, these talks took the form of Scholars Masterclasses twice each half term, where Shiplake’s Scholars would present on a subject of their choice in the Lecture Theatre.
Since the Easter Holidays, these talks have been given virtually and are premiered on the College’s YouTube channel every Tuesday afternoon.
Mr Woolner, said: “Mr Curtis (in devising his ShipShape scheme) asked me to put together the programme in this form, knowing that I have been running a similar series in school.
“So far we have delivered 17 'live' lectures on YouTube Premiere on topics ranging from the Influence of Goats and Gonorrhea on Greek theatre to snake antivenom and the playing skills of Joe Marler!
“Those who have tuned in have gained insight into areas previously unconsidered, and have gained a real appreciation of the sheer variety of interests and expertise within our little community.
“Those delivering the presentations have had the ability to speak about their knowledge and passions in a forum unconstrained by curriculum or time requirements.
“I'm very grateful to all those Scholars and Mentors who gladly took on extra work during lockdown to produce some very professional videos, and to Mrs Green who has been so instrumental in the background getting the technology sorted.”
Look out for more ShiplEd talks after half term. All previous ShiplEd talks can be viewed on Shiplake’s YouTube Channel.
