Sport Sports Report

In this week's Sports Report, we find out how our crews got on at the Reading Regatta and in a home fixture for the Year 9 rowers against St Edward's. In tennis we played some close matches against Pangbourne and in cricket it was a narrow victory for our Lower 3rd XI against Cranford House.

Rowing

Following the Boat Club Dinner on Friday the rowers got back to work racing at Reading Regatta and there was a Year 9 fixture against St Edward's.

Over a short regatta course of 500m in front of the Davies Centre, the Shiplake Year 9 crews won their races in the double scull and coxed four. St Edward's won the singles and octuple event. A great event that was enjoyed by all. Thank you to Mr Jones for organising the event.

Reading Regatta is a 1500m traditional river regatta.

  • The Girls B Quad lost narrowly by 3/4 of a length to Sir William Perkins
  • The Year 10 Coxed four won their event beating Pangbourne in a close final
  • The Year 10 Eight B boat lost to a strong Eton crew
  • The Year 10 Eight A boat beat Pangbourne and Latymer and lost to Eton in the final
  • The Year 11 Eight lost to Abingdon
  • The newly formed senior boys quad won their event beating Wycliffe College and Kingston Grammar School.
  • The 2nd Eight lost by 1/2 length to Groton School, USA who have traveled over for Henley Royal Regatta
  • The 1st Eight won the Senior Men's open eights by a verdict of easily over a Bristol University alumni crew

Next week racing takes place at Henley Women's Regatta for the girls and Marlow International Regatta for the boys. Good luck to those crews.

Tennis

Wednesday saw an incredibly close fixture competed between Shiplake and Pangbourne Colleges. The Shiplake team again had some issues in tying down players for the girls, but A Townsend and S Di Cuffa were this week joined by A McCarthy. Despite not playing tennis, McCarthy and B Varady did manage to steal a set which made the difference between a win and a loss for Shiplake overall. L Poundall suffered a back injury which led to a default, and we wish him a speedy recovery. The highlight of the match, however, was A Townsend and J Blacknell saving four match points from 5-3 down to win a tie break 7-4.

Saturday saw two (and nearly three) fixtures also played against Pangbourne. Away the Year 10 team made up of V Clifford, A Mi, J Hind, S Mealing and J McFarlene played an impressive match of tennis bringing home the win with a 7 sets to 2 victory. At home, the Year 9 team of J Lamburn, B Demery, L Pedrett and T Broomfield played some incredibly strong tennis, with Demery and Lamburn winning all four of their sets. Pedrett and Bloomfield also played some great tennis and won a set saving us from a draw and giving us the win.

Mr Cooper and Mr Shaw were having a friendly knock on the Astro, when to their surprise, a group of Pangbourne players arrived expecting a senior fixture. Fearing they would have to take on the Pangbourne senior team themselves, Mr Shaw suggested they check they were in the right place, and it turns out they should have been at Oratory!

Rounders

Shiplake played their last rounders match of the year, against Leighton Park on Wednesday afternoon in the bright sunshine. The match consisted of two rounds: one of 30 good balls and the other 20. On the first round Shiplake won the match, scoring 14 rounders to 5. Excellent fielding was seen from G Garner and E Lambert. Well done to E Harris for bowling the first game and great catching was seen by E Browne. On the second round Shiplake won again, scoring 9 rounders to 3.5. Good work from M Adams who was our bowler for the second game and fantastic second post fielding by G Garner to stump Leighton Park players out. Well done to P Sanderson and J Pallett for their excellent deep fielding, sending the ball back quickly to the other fielders. Excellent batting from all the girls that played, assisting Shiplake to win. Player of the match was given by Leighton Park to P Sanderson for her batting (she scored a rounder on every hit!) and E Browne for fielding. Well done again to everyone who played - what a great Rounders season!

Cricket

Lower School

On Tuesday 7 June the Lower School had three fixtures with Cranford House School. The first team successfully chased the target of 77 set by Cranford House. F Holgate top scored with 35 not out.

O Wright top scored with 29 as Shiplake Lower School 2nd XI set a total of 88 against Cranford House. Shiplake bowled well in the second innings but Cranford just manage to reach the total with 4 balls remaining.

The Lower School third team scrapped a victory in the final bowl of the match as the Cranford team needed one run to draw or two runs to win - H Biggs instead taking the wicket to much celebration from the rest of his Shiplake teammates.

On 10 June the Lower School had their second game of the week against John Hampden Grammar on New Field. Shiplake bowled first and were set a challenging total of 129 in 20 overs. In the second innings Shiplake were unable to form a decisive partnership as wickets fell regularly and they were bowled out for 90.

1st XI

On Saturday 11 June the 1st XI travelled to Wellington College to take on a very strong under 16 side. Captain for the day O Stalder won the toss and decided to bat and this looked an excellent decision as the opening pair raced to 42-0. Unfortunately a mix up led to W Diver being run out and Shiplake spluttered to 81-7. J Rogers and L O’Donoghue then put on an excellent partnership to set Wellington a target of 147. In the second innings H Batchelor and T Rossouw bowled well but Wellington’s impressive opening batsman scored a flawless 80 to guide the hosts to victory.
