On the last day before half-term, Friday 10 February, the entire College gathered in the Sports Hall for the annual House Singing Competition. It made to be an event with an incredible atmosphere where everyone supported the performers not just from their house, but from across the College.
The House Singing Competition includes solo, ensemble, and Whole House rounds. Houses had been practising long and hard for the contest, with morning breaks and lunchtimes being used as valuable time to become pitch perfect.
On the day of the competition, the Sports Hall was buzzing and rocking as hosts Matt Grundy and Esme Young introduced the rules and judges. On the panel this year were Mr Brown, Mrs Brazil, and The Beacon School's Director of Music, Mr Gavin Lockley, who acted as the lead adjudicator.
Solo Round
The first round of the competition was the Solo Round where there were brilliant individual performances from:
- Leo Guo (Burr) – Chrysanthemum Terrace
- Tom O’Brien (Everett) – Don’t Look Back in Anger
- Izzy Young (Orchard) – Hey Big Spender
- Jack Dag (Skipwith) – Rise Up
- Noah Scotchbrook (Welsh) – When I was Your Man
- Luke Leamon (Lower School) – Stray Cat Strut
The winner of this round was Skipwith’s Jack Dag for his powerful singing. Burr’s Leo Guo took second place and Welsh’s Noah Scotchbrook third. Well done to all the performers – it takes a lot of courage to take to the stage in front of the whole College and everyone performed admirably!
Ensemble Round
Next was the Ensemble Round, where small groups of pupils from each House took to the stage:
- Burr – California Dreaming
- Everett – Bright Lights, Bigger City
- Orchard – Super Trouper
- Skipwith – Oh Woman, Oh Man
- Welsh – It Must be Love
- Lower School – Green, Green Grass
The winning House for this round was Orchard with arguably the performance of the Competition! Second place was awarded to Everett, and third went to Burr.
Whole House Round
The final round of the competition, and perhaps the one most eagerly waited for! Each House in their entirety took to the stage to perform.
- Burr – Here Comes the Sun
- Everett – House of the Rising Sun
- Orchard - Sunny
- Skipwith – Island in the Sun
- Welsh – Let the Sunshine In
- Lower School – Walking on Sunshine
Every House performed with great enthusiasm and the judges struggled to choose a winner for this round. First place went to Orchard, second to Burr, and third to Everett.
Final Scores
- 1st – Orchard
- 2nd – Burr
- 3rd – Skipwith
