In today's Sports Report, we catch up on the results of the week's fixtures. These include block cricket fixtures against St Benedict's School, in addition to tennis matches for our pupils in Lower School through to Sixth Form, and the Boat Club travelling to London for the Poplar Regatta.

Boys’ 1st XI vs St Benedict’s School
Victory came with a strong bowling effort – T Barley took 3 wickets from his 4 overs leaving St Benedict's reduced to 118 for 5 wickets. Shiplake needed 13 runs off the last over to win and two back-to-back boundaries from captain J Rogers helped Shiplake across the line to win by 6 wickets.

Boys’ U14A vs St Benedict’s School
Shiplake came up against two outstanding young individuals who opened the batting for St Benedict's. One of whom scored a fine century and the other 70 runs. However, Shiplake created chances to get them out, but failed to hold onto catches and complete a run out. Chasing 180 runs from 20 overs was always going to be a hurdle too far but I'm pleased that the Shiplake team batted sensibly to accumulate a good score of 126 for 4 - our top score of the season so far!

Colts vs The Oratory School
Result: Shiplake College 8-1 The Oratory School
Lower School vs The Oratory School
Lower School took on The Oratory in their first competitive games of the tennis season. It was a tough contest on a beautifully sunny day with lots of great rallies and points scored. Unfortunately, The Oratory took the win; but it was a great challenge for these boys. Special mentions to L Waldegrave and M Terry for being the only two Year 7 players playing in this fixture and holding their own well against Year 8 players.

Lower School vs Crosfields School
In our first away tennis fixture of the season, we took a very strong side to face Crosfields School. Going straight into a fixture with minimal time for warmups made it very difficult to hit the ground running as two of our teams found out. However, S Lee and J Feltham managed to win their first game 7-5. In the second round of matches, A Massie and captain W Hunt managed to play some fantastic tennis to win their game 6-2 while the other two teams fell short. In the final round of matches it was incredibly tight but due to the length of previous matches, we had to cut the last round short where we lost two with the team of I Walmsley and O Thomas managing to get a draw.

Rowing
Poplar Regatta, Sunday 14 May
Some rowing was cancelled over the weekend but the Poplar Regatta went ahead. This was held in East London on the Royal Albert Docks. The 1st VIII, 2nd VIII and J15As all raced over the multi-lane 2km course.
The 2nd VIII competed in the Junior 18 1st VIII category and finished 4th in their heat, unfortunately missing out on the final.
The J15s had a straight final and had an epic battle down the course side by side with King's School Wimbledon with the latter crew pushing through in the final 250m. A great race and good experience ahead of National Schools' Regatta.
The 1st VIII raced in the Open Senior Men's event. In the heat, they finished second behind University of London's 2nd VIII. In the final, the 1st VIII moved on from their earlier performance to finish 2nd, behind University of London's 1st VIII, and ahead of the 2nd VIII that beat them in the earlier heat.
