History

As we had with science, there was also a double bill of history events that took place at the College last week. On Thursday 25 May, we welcomed Reach Out Arts to the College for a Medieval Morning workshop for our Lower School pupils. And the following day on Friday 26 May, the College welcomed Professor Jonathan Phillips for a lecture on the Crusades for our Sixth Form pupils.

Medieval Morning

Out in the beautiful sunshine on Skipwith Lawn we welcomed Rich and Mildred to work with our students on life in the Middle Ages. The pupils were treated to a fascinating morning where they learned (and even tested!) formidable weapons such as swords and long-bows, stamped their own medieval coins, and everyone also had the opportunity to practised with feathered-writing quills.

It was a wonderful chance for pupils to learn so much about everyday life in Medieval England, including what games children would play, the clothes people wore, and the food they ate. In the end, all the pupils had a chance to practise their archery in an attempt to rescue Mr Player from the stocks! Everyone had a lovely day and learned a lot!

Year 8 pupil, Luke Leamon, who was amongst those at the workshop said, ‘My favourite was the coin making. That was pretty fun! It was also cool that we got to keep the coins that we made. I also enjoyed the archery and seeing Mr Player in the stocks!’

Crusades Lecture

Professor Jonathan Phillips from Royal Holloway University visited the College to speak to our Year 12 pupils about the Crusades. Professor Phillips is a renowned historian and esteemed author of many books and articles about the Crusades and is at the forefront of research on the subject.

The Year 12 pupils really enjoyed his fascinating talk, and it has really enlightened them on the topic in preparation for their A-level coursework. For those considering studying history beyond A-level at university, it also gave those pupils the chance to experience what lectures at that level are like.

Thank you to Professor Phillips, as well as to Rich and Mildred from Reach Out Arts for visiting last week to deliver these activities and talks to our pupils. Make sure to check out the gallery below from Medieval Morning as well as the highlights reel on our Instagram page!
