Today, Thursday 6 June, marks 80 years since the D-Day landings on the Beaches of Normandy on 6 June 1944. It is considered widely to be one of the most crucial and pivotal moments during World War 2 and in our Whole School Assembly on Monday 2 June, Head of History Mr Player spent some time talking about this important event.
The D-Day landings of 6 June 1944 was the largest seaborne invasion in history. Along with the associated airborne operations, it marked the beginning of the liberation of France and western Europe.
80 years on, events are taking place in France and in the UK to mark the 80th anniversary of D-Day with many world leaders, including President Biden and King Charles III, in France to commemorate the day.
Also commemorating D-Day later this summer will be our very own Deputy Head (Academic), Mr Jones, when he takes on the Pedal Normandy Beaches challenge, raising funds for the Royal British Legion. This 350km bike ride will commemorate the 80th anniversary of D-Day by visiting all 5 landing beaches over a weekend. Having already completed the Pedal to Ypres event in 2023, Mr Jones is once again raising funds for the Royal British Legion to provide the lifelong support that our Armed Forces community needs and deserves today. Any donation would be greatly appreciated and can be done so here.
You can listen to Mr Player and Mr Jones talk more about D-Day in the video below.
