On Friday 9 June, we welcomed 10 primary schools from the local area for a Kwik Cricket Festival! Played across four pitches on our Front Field, over 100 children enjoyed a morning of cricket in the beautiful June sunshine.
There were 12 teams involved, put into four groups of three. Each team played three matches which included a single batting innings consisting of 9 overs – the 9th over acting as a ‘Super 9th Over’ where all runs within were doubled! The team batting started with a score of 100 runs and each time a batter was dismissed, five runs were deducted. Normal scoring applied with runs and 4s and 6s of which there were many; much to the delight of the cheering group of Year 11 pupils watching from the Orchard House pavilion during their breaktime.
The teams and scores were as follows:
Division A, Pitch One: Trinity Kites, Heights Hawks, Valley Road Pumas
- Innings 1 – Kites (143) v Hawks (215)
- Innings 2 – Pumas (152) v Kites (164)
- Innings 3 – Hawks (196) v Pumas (136)
Division B, Pitch Two: Caversham Lions, Shiplake Bears, Sonning Common Leopards
- Innings 1 – Lions (138) v Bears (130)
- Innings 2 – Leopards (192) v Lions (131)
- Innings 3 – Bears (149) v Leopards (178)
Division C, Pitch Three: Caversham Eagles, Trinity Foxes, Woodcote Rhinos
- Innings 1 – Eagles (199) v Foxes (146)
- Innings 2 – Rhinos (163) v Eagles (156)
- Innings 3 – Foxes (131) v Rhinos (195)
Division D, Pitch Four: St Martin’s Tigers, Badgemore Bulls, Sacred Heart Falcons
- Innings 1 – Tigers (208) v Bulls (162)

- Innings 3 – Bulls (109) v Falcons (114)
Director of Cricket and organiser of the event, Mr Chris Ellison, said:
‘As a College, we are committed to moving cricket forward for girls and boys. This event is an integral part of our delivery programme for the sport, and we are grateful to the support of our Sports Leaders for umpiring and scoring on such a hot day. We are also thankful to the sponsors, Invesco, for supplying the medals which each child took away.’
For Sonning Common Primary School and Shiplake Primary School, the fun did not stop there! Following on from the Kwik Cricket Festival, the Sonning Common players, and all Shiplake Primary's Year 4 and 5 pupils, had the opportunity to climb one of the College’s big cedar trees thanks to The Great Big Tree Climbing Company. Some of our Year 9 pupils and also our boarders then enjoyed the chance to climb the big tree that afternoon and into the evening.
We’re sure that everyone had a fantastic time, and it was lovely to see so many smiles and so many children on Front Field playing some great cricket!
