Ahead of today's (Friday 10 November) massive Hockey Night Lights fixture against St Joseph's College, we caught up with Captain of Girls' Hockey, Olivia Parkin, for a special 'A Conversation With...' edition. From inspiring the next generation of hockey players at the College to her future plans, read all about it in this feature.

When did you join Shiplake College and what subjects are you currently studying?

I joined Shiplake College in Year 12, and I am currently studying business, criminology, and politics.

As Captain of Girls’ Hockey, how are you all feeling about today’s match against St Joseph’s College?

We’re all feeling very excited for the match as we have the opportunity to show the school and all of our supporters how we have improved, in addition to our enthusiasm for hockey. I think it will be a thrilling game, with the whole squad excited to play. There will be a positive attitude bringing positive vibes to the game, which this team brings a lot of!

What are your predictions ahead of the match?

I think the match will be a close one and could go either way as both teams are similar in skill and ability. However, I do have the confidence that we will come out on top with our excitement, energy, as well as the supporters who will be helping us throughout the match.

What kind of role has hockey played for you during your time here?

Hockey has played a huge role in my time at Shiplake. It has helped me to build relationships and has allowed me to get to know the other year groups in a new and fun environment and all support each other.

How will it feel playing in front of a big crowd, including all of our Year 7 girls; and how do you think it will inspire them?

All the Year 12 and 13 hockey players will have the privilege of being a role model and an inspiration for the younger girls to look up to. Hopefully, it will make them want to compete in the same event when their time comes.

I think for everyone in the team, they will feel a higher pressure to play their best in front of a crowd. But I also think it will motivate everyone to play their best and stay competitive, no matter how the match is going.

What is your most memorable moment at Shiplake?

Celebrating my 18th birthday at school, which was celebrated with all of my friends. Gilson House also made a big deal with balloons, fun pictures and a cake!

What do you plan to do after Shiplake College?

I plan to go to university and study sociology and criminology. And, of course, play more hockey!
