A No-Brainer Event!
PsychologyBiology

On Friday 17 January, we were delighted to welcome back Dr Guy Sutton for our annual Brain Day! The day is tailored towards our Sixth Form biology and psychology pupils who spent the day off-timetable for a series of talks, presentations, and dissection!

Dr Sutton’s primary research interests are the genetics of neural development and brain function, together with the interactive nature of biological, genetic and behavioural factors in disease processes. His expertise and engaging way of presenting meant that our A-level pupils had an insight into brain behaviours and received an introduction to neuroscience.

The highlight of the day however was the brain dissection, as students observed a dissection of a sheep's brain and were able to see (and hold) the different structures they had learned about in class.

Speaking after Brain Day, Head of Psychology Mr Shaw said:

‘We were thrilled to host our fourth Brain Day, led by the eminent neuroscientist Dr Guy Sutton, for our Sixth Form psychology and biology students. Dr Sutton delivered a fascinating series of talks exploring the brain's structure and function, ground-breaking advancements in brain mapping and cerebral organoids, and the complex interplay between brain disorders and behaviour. He also sparked lively discussion around the concept of a 'criminal brain' and captivated everyone with a live dissection! It was an unforgettable day of discovery and inspiration, showcasing the incredible world of neuroscience.’

Following the day, it was great to hear some great feedback from our pupils:

  • "It was at times disgusting, but mindbogglingly interesting!"
  • ‘Understanding the possible implication of orange sized brain tumours in altering behaviour, and potential criminality was fascinating"
  • "Dr Sutton was so fascinating, and he clearly loved his subject and was so enthusiastic"

Thank you, Dr Sutton, for once again taking the time to visit the College and inspire our pupils!
