Chapel and Assemblies Whole School

Shiplake College gathered on Friday 11 November at 11.00am, to observe a two-minute silence for the fallen servicemen and women, and to give thought to those who are still fighting for their countries today. The entire Shiplake cohort gathered under Skipwith tower for the service on Armistice Day.

Staff joined pupils on the forecourt under Skipwith tower, for a moving service given by Reverend Stephen Cousins. Head Chapel Warden Austin Burnand, and Deputy Chapel Warden Ben Tresidder helped to lead the service, reading out Laurence Binyon’s iconic poem, For the Fallen. The poem, written at the outbreak of World War One, has been adopted by the Royal British Legion as an exhortation for ceremonies of Remembrance to commemorate fallen servicemen and women. Ben Fletcher played the Last Post from the top of the tower, as silence fell across the crowd. It was a moving service, reminding everyone of the sacrifices given by past generations, and the fighting still ongoing, for all of our freedom.
