1st XI v Pangbourne College
Shiplake 1st XI recorded their biggest win over local rivals Pangbourne for many a year, with a convincing 138 run win on Saturday. After winning the toss, Joe Tucker elected to bat and Shiplake set off at a blistering pace, with opener Ollie Brown scoring 31 off 14 balls. When he was out, Tucker continued where he left off, registering his maiden 1st XI 50. He was ably supported by Josh Howard (48) and Callum Creighton (33 not out). Shiplake finished with an excellent 219 for 5 off their 25 overs.
Pangbourne’s innings got off to the worst possible start, with Creighton picking up wickets with the third and fourth ball of the innings to reduce them to 0 for 2. After another wicket in his next over Pangbourne were 6 for 3. Wickets continued to fall at regular intervals as Freddie Bowcock (3 for 12) and Callum Theodorou (4 for 14) bowled brilliantly.
The 1st XI are now 8 games unbeaten and play The Oratory on Saturday in a 40 over game. 7 of the 1st XI squad also travel to Millfield School on Wednesday to play in the U17 National Cup Quarter Final.
U17 v Winchester College (Regional Final of National Cup)
The U17 cricket team registered what is arguably the best victory in the College’s history last Thursday. Having beaten Eton College and Tiffin School in previous rounds, the boys were confident going into their Regional Final against another cricketing powerhouse, Winchester College.
Winchester won the toss and opted to bat on a green surface, which offered help for the bowlers. When Oliver Dorrell bowled opener Figy with the fourth ball of the match it looked like it was going to be tricky batting conditions. However, Winchester batted patiently to reach 75 for 4 off 15 overs when drinks were taken. Shiplake’s bowling tightened up after some light refreshments and excellent spells from Alex Bartlett (4 for 14) and Captain Matt Dalrymple (1 for 14) tied the opponents down. With their talented number 3, Egleston scoring 51, Winchester finished on 141 for 9, with Creighton (1 for 20) coming back to bowl a tight spell at the death.
Shiplake’s reply started brightly and opener Matt Dalrymple (43) and Year 9 Jai Angell (16) put on 50 for the second wicket. However, when Dalrymple was out Shiplake still needed 60 runs to win. Callum Creighton (20) and Josh Howard (33 not out) steered Shiplake home with five overs and four wickets to spare.
Shiplake go into the National Cup Quarter Finals and our opponents will be from the remaining teams – Millfield, Sedbergh, Whitgift, Shrewsbury, Norwich, Brentwood, Bradfield or Bedford. We are looking forward to the next round.
U15A v Pangbourne College
The Under 15A team claimed a well-fought victory against Pangbourne College at the weekend. Pangbourne elected to bat first but with some fierce opening bowling from Shiplake College, were kept to just 25 runs for 5 wickets. Luke Theodorou and Alex Bartlett took three wickets each in the first few overs. Alex went on to claim a fourth wicket later in the innings. Sam Redding, Luke Taylor and Josh Hazell also claimed wickets, to get Pangbourne all out for 120. Shiplake’s batting and running was accomplished. Jack Livingstone-Smith and Ed Atkinson both scored 32 and 41 runs, respectively, which set a solid platform for Shiplake to reach the required 121 runs target with four overs to spare.
U14B v Pangbourne College
The U14B side took to the field for their last home match of the season against Pangbourne. When the two sides last met, only the rain stopped Shiplake from securing a victory. With a much better weather forecast for this game, the team were feeling confident. A few last minute absentees had meant that the opposition were only able to field eight players. To ensure a fair contest, the umpires decided that two of the Pangbourne batsmen could return later in the innings. With that decided, the opposition took to the field. Shiplake struck early, with both Haaris Hanif and Captain Hashim Iqbal taking wickets with their first overs. Some very efficient bowling kept the run rate down and by the eighth over, Pangbourne had been reduced to 28 for 6. A change of bowling brought Bertie Wallace and Matti Hartrup in to the attack. Matti was unable to take any wickets, but helped to keep the run rate down with some efficient deliveries. Bertie took two for himself and another change of bowling led to Freddie Ellis taking the last wicket with his very first delivery. Ben Allan must also get a nod for some solid fielding, despite falling somewhat foul of the vagaries of cricket, neither getting a chance to bat or bowl during this match; something that will surely be addressed in the next game. Pangbourne were all out for 42 runs and each dismissal was bowled, which is a very unusual statistic in any format of the game.
Shiplake had a very achievable target in their sights. Given that Pangbourne were short of players, a number of the Shiplake team volunteered to help out in the field. Many thanks to Will Taylor, Ned Simkin-Carr and Abdulramen Alroomi who all played their part. Hashim and Charlie Stewart (who also had a good game as wicket keeper) took to the crease with one thing on their minds; score runs. They started well and, even though Charlie’s wicket fell in the third over, they were well on their way. Bertie came in at three and provided great support to Hashim, who was putting in a captain’s performance, scoring boundaries with great fluency. Bertie was eventually bowled in the seventh over and Freddie took his place with 10 runs left to score. These were quickly picked up, with Freddie’s two successive boundaries securing an eight-wicket victory. The U14B team play Reading Boys in their last game of the season with a great chance of securing a winning record overall.
Man of the match was awarded to Hashim Iqbal, well done!
