Last term, Shiplake Lower School pupils decorated paper mache Hippos to return to The Leander Club to celebrate its 200th birthday.
All of the decorated hippos were displayed at Henley’s River and Rowing Museum for a private showing on 22 May and for a public exhibition the following week. The Hippos will now be auctioned and sold, with proceeds being donated to the Kafue River and Rowing Centre on the Zambezi in Africa.
Contributed by the College were Hippos decorated by Year 8 Oliver Dee, whose Hippo was inspired by ‘a touch of class’, Year 7 Finn Suter’s ‘Flash’ inspired creation and our very own Will Satch’s Olympic Gold Medal inspired animal. Mrs Thomas, Teacher of Art, and Mrs Hallam, Head of Art oversaw the project and were fortunate enough to be able to view the herd of beasts at the River and Rowing Museum and said ‘There were some amazing creative Hippos on display and it was lovely to see Shiplake’s contributions amongst them.’
The Hippos are up for auction here and will be on display around Henley throughout the summer, before going to their new homes.
