It's been a very successful start to the season for our rowers with a win at The Hampton Small Boats Head. A record eight Shiplake pupils also took part in the GB long distance trials with brilliant results.
Thanks to Mr Currie for the following report:
GB Trials
Two weekends ago Shiplake College Boat Club took eight members of the boat club to compete at GB long distance trials. The trial was held in Boston, Lincolnshire over 5000m where 150 boys and 100 girls participated. This is the first trial of the year and is classed as an early identification trial. The top Shiplake performances came from Rhys Ash and Liv Morgan. Rhys had a great race and finished 8th overall, Liv continued to show her quality finishing 6th overall. All students gave a good account of themselves and will be racing at the next trials in February.

Hampton Small Boats Head & Wallingford Head
Over Exeat weekend the Senior and Year 11 rowers competed at Hampton Head and Wallingford Head. Hampton Head was on Saturday and is run by Hampton School and is targeted as a "small boats head" meaning singles, doubles and quads. The race is held over 3km on the Hampton School and Molsey Rowing Club stretch. Shiplake College competed mostly in pairs and singles at the event and racing in both the morning and afternoon division. Congratulations to Rhys Ash and Dom Brown for winning the Junior 18 pairs event. Although Angus Wood and Robert Humphris competed in the junior 17 pairs category their time would have won the Junior 16 category which is encouraging. Liv Morgan finished second by only 1 second in the Junior 18 singles.

Wallingford Head followed on Sunday and was the first chance for the college to race in eights this season. Wallingford Head is raced over 4250m up stream finishing outside Oxford Universities' boathouse in Wallingford town. Shiplake College Boat Club entered two match boats of senior boys, one crew was mostly Year 13 and the other crew was all year 12. A year 11 crew raced in J16 VIIIs, despite having a very limited amount of time on the water this term due to rugby. This crew put in a valiant effort finishing 4th only 9 seconds off the winners Norwich School. In training the two senior boats were well matched so both crews were keen to race and see which one would come out on top. The Year 12 crew stroked by Boret took the win over the Year 13s by 10 seconds. This result will no doubt motivate the Year 13s in training over the next few weeks.
