For many it was a relaxing break, but for the Shiplake College Estates team and building contractors the summer holidays have been a time of fervent activity. Through the hard work of these teams a huge amount of progress has been made around the College site on various projects.
The most dramatic change over the summer holidays must be the Davies Centre, our soon to be multi-activity centre on the banks of the river Thames. The steel work is now complete and the first floor concrete floor has been poured. The ground source heat pump is in line with our “green” ambitions and will warm the building in winter and cool it in the summer. The four bore holes descend an impressive 150m! Next will be the installation of the roof cladding, the first step to making the building watertight before the weather changes. Design has also started on the climbing wall which will include 9 roped climbs each with 3 different difficulties, ensuring that it caters for climbers of all abilities. Overhangs and ledges will also be added for interest and complexity. Parents will be able to view climbing in action from the glazed viewing platform on the first floor.
The Sixth Form Centre is progressing well. Additional drainage has been installed along the main drive which will also help to protect Skipwith House from flooding. Designers are now starting to plan the internal decoration and ICT installation.
In the Sports Hall there has been a refurbishment of the changing rooms and toilet facilities. The area is now looking refreshed and rejuvenated with new doors, toilets and showers. There has been an upgrade to the Skipwith House fire alarm system with new fire doors being installed along the first floor. The classrooms on the first floor and the study rooms on the second floor have also had a new coat of paint.
Due to the high demand for Lower School places, the Lower School has expanded into the West Wing of College House. The Year 8 pupils now have new study spaces for prep time. At the same time College House has received an unplanned flooring upgrade due to a flood suffered at the end of last term. This is now all repaired and the day room is back to looking its best.
The Headmaster's office has also had a smart redecoration. A new desk, curtains and seating area have made the room lighter and brighter and it is a welcoming space for parents, pupils, staff and Mr Howe's dog Simba!
Assistant Bursar Julie Shorter said: 'The entire Estates team has worked incredibly hard this summer with extensive areas of the College having been upgraded. The team's commitment, resilience and stamina have been exemplary. I am proud to be part of this great team and what we have been able to deliver.”
