The most competitive day of Year 10 Enrichment Week is upon us: Smoothie Day! The past two days have been pretty full on for pupils and staff, so in light of this Ms Lizzie Morgan who has organised the schedule, tried to put in some breaks and lighten the intensity of the workload today. Although the teams seem to have worked incredibly hard again.
Year 10 started the day at 8.15am, with a briefing in the Lecture Theatre about what the day would entail. This was followed by a talk from the Director of Marketing, Mrs Katherine Green, who gave the cohort a robust branding and marketing presentation, to help the groups with their tasks. Each team had to develop a product, marketing strategy, creative, undertake research of both their market and product (I tasted several and they definitely varied in consistency and taste) and the profitability of their business.
Each team had specific roles to ensure that they concentrated on a different business area; a team leader (only one), creative team (no more than two), a marketing team and a business analyst. The creative team was also responsible for creating the product ‘a smoothie’ and road testing all the possible ingredient’s.
The teams had to build a company, create a name, vision and design a logo. They undertook research to find out about major competitors, the cost of the product and pricing strategy, consider the size of the bottle and shape and how much profit they wanted to make.
Then they were challenged with making the smoothie and designing a logo for the bottle. They also tested their smoothies (on real people – mainly staff) to find out what people thought of them, acted on the feedback or used it for marketing.
Each team then had to create a tag-line or slogan and make an advert or billboard for their campaign. Some of the teams excelled and produced web sites, flyers and had amazing prop’s. They had also considered the nutritional value, fair trade options for their smoothies and one team even had a ‘buy all four flavours’ to receive a gift! Each flavour having a different personality and taste!
Due to the amount of work that was undertaken today by all the groups there was no longer a major 'pitch presentation' at the end of the day but, students were asked to present their work/attract investors on a table in the stable yard.
Each pupil and many staff were given fake money to consider each team’s efforts - investing as they wished! The team with the most money after the investment will be announced tomorrow!
