A Shiplake College pupil’s A Level art examination piece was on display at Phyllis Court in Henley last week for The Arts Society Henley’s September lecture. Before the lecture, Georgia Holliday, who left Year 13 in the summer, was presented with a certificate and cheque for £60 by Lady Camoys, the president of the society.
Georgia’s work was one of six pieces selected by the Young Arts team at The Arts Society Henley to be on display. These pieces have also been entered into the national Rising Stars competition, developed with the Royal Society of British Artists (RBA). Aspiring young artists are identified and entered by local Arts Societies and the RBA then selects the very best pieces for an exhibition in London. Approximately twenty pieces are chosen from hundreds of submissions from across the country each year. A representative from The Arts Society Henley said "We have our fingers crossed that at least one of our Henley selection will make it through to the final group."
All Art A Level students are required to do a fifteen hour examination based on a given title; the title that Georgia had to use was ‘Shadows’, which she also named her final piece. Georgia’s Art teacher Mrs Thomas, who attended the presentation at Phyllis Court, said of Georgia's achievement, “We are really proud of her. She has done a really good job, her painting is outstanding. It’s really set the bar for this year and it’s inspired the Year 13s to paint to that standard.”
The prestigious RBA Rising Stars competition brings together work from school sixth forms, colleges and artists aged under 35 years old from all across the country. The RBA say that “This exhibition gives an overview of the strength and depth of artistic ability, combined with intrinsic flair and creativity that exists throughout Britain today.”
Since leaving Shiplake, Georgia has started a gap year and wants to go to university next academic year to study a BA (Hons) in Art. Congratulations to Georgia on her success and we wish you the best of luck with the RBA competition.
