This week we had a catch up with Mr Miller, who returned to Shiplake in September having previously been a member of the English Department from 2013 to 2018. He is now working in the Learning Development Department as well as coaching rugby. Mr Miller has previously been a Resident Tutor in Welsh House and Head of Cricket.
What does a day in the life of Mr Miller entail?
I usually try to get in early and walk my dog, Besh (short for Bathsheba, named after one of Thomas Hardy's heroines)... she's now two and comes to work with me three times a week. Besh is a complete coward and has a mild addiction to tennis balls. I'll then head to my classroom to start work. After lessons it's then down to the riverside pitches for a training session with the U15B rugby team, and then (if it's a Monday or Thursday) I head up to Welsh House for an evening duty.
How does working in Learning Development compare to working in the English Department?
I still teach lots of English in LDev, so there's plenty of crossover. However, the smaller groups allow for a slower pace and close attention to some of the key skills needed to develop literacy levels. I miss teaching A Level English, and not getting to know as many students in the school, but it is also very rewarding when you see the progress learners can make in this environment.
What inspired you to go into teaching?
I didn't really want to leave university, and so when I found there was funding available for a PGCE I decided to give teaching a go (whilst at the same time prolonging student life). I also used to enjoy working as a junior football coach, so hoped this would transfer across to a classroom setting.
What has been your greatest achievement in your professional career to date?
It's fantastic when students get great results, and I've been lucky enough to teach some brilliant classes... but my greatest achievement was probably getting a Sixth Form class to enjoy Tess of the D'urbervilles... at least I think they enjoyed it.
What is your favourite book/fictional character?
Captain Corelli's Mandolin by Louis de Bernières, and Lyra Belacqua from Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
Spending time with my girlfriend (Helen) and Besh... of course. Anything outdoorsy really - if the weather is reasonable then I try and go cycling. I am a very amateur triathlete and whilst I don't have a rigorous training regime, I try to 'compete' in a few races every year - it's a good excuse to try and stay fit. I like cooking, but I'm not very good! I read quite a bit, but I also enjoy kicking back with some Netflix.
What does the future hold for Mr Miller?
If I don't manage to write a best-seller, then maybe I'll end up with a gold, black and maroon watch strap.
