Whole School Chapel and Assemblies

On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, Shiplake College will remember them.

Parents, pupils and staff gathered in the Great Hall on Remembrance Sunday for our traditional Act of Remembrance. The service began with a welcome from the Deputy Head Chapel Warden, C Bradshaw, and during the singing of I Vow to Thee, My Country the Combined Cadet Force banner and the College wreaths were brought forward by cadets representing all three services. In the Act of Remembrance itself the names of the fallen, including those from the families of members of the congregation, were read aloud. The Last Post and Reveille were played faultlessly by B Howard-Jones. Other musical items included the Camerata singing the anthem For the Fallen by Douglas Guest, and Music from the Funeral of Queen Mary, played by the Brass Ensemble. In his sermon, the Chaplain, the Revd C Briggs, referred to the Monument against Fascism in Harburg, a district of Hamburg. This 'disappearing' 12 metre high column was designed to ask its observers to take upon themselves the struggle for peace and justice. He also referred to the remembering which takes place in the Eucharist, and how we might take upon ourselves the responsibility for the winning of peace.

At the end of the service the Joint Head of College, E Thomas, carried out the College Wreath. Cadets, Prefects, Chapel Wardens and staff then made their way to the War Memorial in Lower Shiplake to take part in the community Act of Remembrance and to lay the College Wreath. Earlier in the morning E Jones and E Dallas had played The Last Post and Reveille at the Shiplake and Dunsdon Parish services of remembrance respectively.

On Armistice Day the whole College community gathered in the Skipwith Courtyard for a short Act of Remembrance, with the playing of The Last Post and Reveille by B Howard-Jones from Skipwith Tower. The wreath was then laid by the Headmaster on the brass memorial to the Honourable Captain Anthony Phillimore in the Parish Church.
