Year 12 Media Studies students paid a visit to the British Film Institute (BFI) earlier this month, as part of their work on producing their own music videos.

The BFI is a film and charitable organisation which promotes and preserves film-making and television in the United Kingdom. The BFI uses lottery funds to encourage film production, distribution and education. It also houses and maintains the world’s largest film archive.

The day at the BFI provided an excellent opportunity for students to understand more about how music videos function and the process of producing them. As part of their media course, they will be making their own music videos by the end of the year. The students were accompanied on the trip by Mr Gubby and Mr Milburn.

The morning session took students through this history of music video and some landmark texts were discussed, including Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody and Michael Jackson's Billie Jean. Students were also shown how to analyse music videos and what techniques to look for when researching videos to inspire their own work.

The afternoon session focused on a Q and A with award winning video and Advert Director,  Ian Pons Jewell who spoke openly about his career and the work he has made. He talked about his influences and provided some essential practical tips that will help when the students get the cameras out to start filming their projects.

Mr Marcus Milburn, Head of Media Studies, said:"It's always great to come to the BFI, students get to hear from those actually making this type of media text and I was so impressed with how everyone engaged with the sessions.

“A number of thoughtful questions were asked by our students and I feel that they got an awful lot out of the day. The BFI runs student events throughout the year and I have no doubt that we will be back again soon."
