At various points of the year, the Design, Engineering and Technology Department will be running competitions for DET students based around their own ideas and perceptions of ‘what is good design...?’
Just before Christmas, Year 10 boys were set this challenge and were lucky enough to have their ideas judged by Will Knight, a creative director who works for some of the top brands across the globe.
Mr Chris Lloyd, Head of DET, said: “This competition is important because design doesn’t exist in a vacuum. It requires users and buyers. Working designers need to be able to communicate their ideas and associated benefits to both.
“Ultimately this means that good design needs to be easy to understand, because confused customers become someone else’s customers. Good communication is at the heart of good design and successful design processes and as such this initiative nurtures that in the students.”
Congratulations to Sam Frisby who was selected as the winner of the Year 10 competition.
Commenting on the winning submission, Will Knight said: “Sam was the clear winner for me.
"He gave strong, considered examples in a very clear presentation. His points were well articulated and I quickly understood his case. I was interested (and surprised) with the examples. They made me think and I feel like I took something new away from the piece.”
Mr Knight was also really impressed with the submissions from the other Year 10 pupils - Monty Walker, Ben Hutt, B Zacharias and C Voncke.
He said: “The work of the students demonstrated both awareness and interest in the role and impact of design in the world, and bodes well for their development and contributions in the field, should they wish to pursue a career in design.”
Well done all!
