In today's 'A Conversation With...', we caught up with Joint Head of College, P Kay, in the first of two specials with our Heads of College. Now in her final year at Shiplake, we learn more about her plans for after Shiplake, and what some of her most memorable and proudest moments have been from her time at Shiplake.

How long have you been a pupil at Shiplake and what are your roles?

I have been a part of the Shiplake community for two years now, joining in Year 12, and I’m part of Gilson and Everett house. My roles at the school are both Joint Head of College and Deputy Head of the Feminist Society.

What subjects are you studying and why?

I currently study media, business CTEC, and drama. I chose these subjects because as a person, I am creatively driven and I find enjoyment in using my initiative and entrepreneurial skills. As such, these subjects all provide space for inputting your own ideas and group collaboration work, which I love.

What have you got involved in as Joint Head of College that you are most proud of?

Personally, I was really proud of myself and other Joint Head of College Sam's idea to hold a ‘splat the teacher’ charity event. It was a new and fun way to get everyone involved in raising money for charity, and it meant pupils could have a laugh while getting involved.

I have also been proud to represent the School at open mornings and, beyond College events, being able to express my passion for the College along with others; all of which has been an honour.

With Year 7 girls joining the College in September 2023, what is your advice for this first group of girls?

Don’t be nervous! Being the first girls to join the College in Year 7 is an amazing opportunity to be the leaders of such an exciting change. Teachers and students will all be focused on making sure the girls have an amazing time and are really taken care of within the school; we’ve been preparing all year and can’t wait to welcome the Year 7 girls to such a special community!

What have been some of your most memorable moments from your time at Shiplake?

Wow... there's been a few! One would have to be getting involved in the girls' Football Night Lights and scoring a (questionable!) penalty. Also, last summer when we played volleyball in the pool but, as it was freezing outside, we ended up in the pool complete with full-on outfits!

But of course, the most memorable moment was finding out that I had been made a prefect, and then later getting an email to go to the Headmaster's office, only to find out I was going to be Joint Head of Shiplake College. This is something that I won’t ever forget - it felt like a huge honour and privilege.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

I love to travel and explore different places and cities. In my spare time I also love meeting up with friends from inside and outside of school to socialise. Going to a good restaurant is also always a treat.

What do you hope to do when you leave Shiplake this summer?

Gosh it’s come round so fast! I hope to go to university and study within the creative industries - my A-level subjects will allow me a variety of course options as well as my role of Joint Head of College which has provided so many great opportunities in other areas such as public speaking and organisation. Hopefully, if all goes well with results, I’ll be off to university after a great summer filled with more travelling and socialising!
