In this week's 'A Conversation With... ' we talk to maths and physics teacher, Mr Ben Claridge. Mr Claridge is also the College's Head of Football (coaching the U14As) and is working towards becoming a CCF instructor. Outside of school, Mr Claridge loves going on adventures with his dog Dexter.
Before Shiplake, where were you previously?
I was an engineer at a company called Nexeon who have just received a large investment from BMW and Samsung. There I was a Process Engineer Manager - that means running around and fixing machines all day.
What is the best thing about Shiplake College?
Definitely the people. From the teachers, to support staff, all the way down to the students, everyone at Shiplake is friendly and has a story to tell.
What do you love most about physics and what inspired you to become a teacher?
Physics is a subject that has endless topics that can fascinate you. From space to Quantum Mechanics, physics can always surprise you with amazing facts and not just boring equations. I have been a tutor for many years and teaching seemed like the next logical step. When I visited Shiplake for the first time, I knew this was the perfect place to start.
What's your favourite physics fact?
That every atom in your body and the objects around you, were made in the core of a dying star that once exploded right where we are. So when you feel down, just remember that you are literally made of stardust!
Can you tell us a bit about your football background?
Previously I have been a coach at Berks Elite FC which is an elite club based in Reading that is affiliated with Chelsea FC. I was a coach there for four years where during two of those, I was the club coordinator where I oversaw all the teams at the club. Before this I was a volunteer coach and goalkeeper coach in the Reading area.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
My weekends and holidays are spent on adventures with my dog Dexter. We love going on hikes and getting as many pictures in as possible.
What does the future hold for Mr Claridge?
As many adventures as possible and to visit some more exotic places for the first time in two years.
