In this week's 'A Conversation With... ' we talked to chemistry teacher Mr Andrew Jones who joined Shiplake in January. Mr Jones has not always been a chemistry teacher and has done some interesting jobs before he settled into teaching. In his spare time Mr Jones loves walking, hiking and travelling.
What is your role at Shiplake and where were you previously?
I am a chemistry teacher and I coach the J14 rowing. I am a Year 11 tutor in Orchard and an evening tutor in Gilson. I am also working with a small group on setting up the Diversity and Equality Committee. Prior to joining Shiplake I taught at Maiden Erlegh School.
What are your first impressions of working at Shiplake?
Shiplake is such a wonderful place to work. My first impression is one that has stuck with me, the students and staff are welcoming, friendly and all share a common goal, to strive to be the best they can be. It is such a great, supportive place to work.
What got you interested in Chemistry and what inspired you to become a teacher?
It may sound like a cliche but it really was my chemistry teacher. His name was Mr Gillespie, and he taught with such passion that I absolutely loved going to my chemistry lessons.
However, teaching was not my first career. In my previous role I enjoyed the aspect of my job that was training and supporting other people, and from that grew this desire to combine both my passion for science and training. I went and completed my PGCE and never looked back.
What did you do before you became a teacher?
Prior to teaching, I worked for a major UK airline, in various roles. It was a great way to travel and I made some amazing friends both in the UK and around the world. I also have performed in musical theatre, performing in London’s West End and worked for Disney over in Orlando. Somewhat varied, but each teaching me something new and shaping me into who I am today.
You are obviously well travelled. Where is the best place you have been to and why?
When travelling, I like to learn and embrace local cultures. One of my favourite places to visit is most definitely Japan. I have been lucky enough to travel to many parts of Japan and each visit allowed me to learn something new about the country but also its many traditions. I would truly recommend visiting Japan.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
I love being outdoors, be it rowing, hiking, walking etc. I like being active. I am from North Wales originally, not too far from Snowdon and so walking has always been a hobby of mine.
What does the future hold for Mr Jones?
Adventure, travelling during the holidays again, now that we can travel.
In terms of work, developing my skills both in the classroom but also as a rowing coach.
