A group of Year 13 sociology and criminology students enjoyed a spooky evening out in London’s Brick Lane area, taking in the Jack The Ripper tour, just before the end of last term.

They travelled by train and underground and the trip was organised by Ms Magee who was accompanied by Miss Bhatti.

The Jack the Ripper Tour is significant to both criminology and sociology, as it looks at serial killers and also the historical, social, and cultural context of the environment in which the notorious Jack The Ripper committed his heinous crimes more than a century ago.

The students were amazed at how much of the original architecture, which The Ripper would have encountered and even resided in, is still there.

The guided tour took in the key locations where Jack’s victims were found. The tour guide had an in-depth knowledge of The Ripper case and had previously been a police detective.

Student of criminology and sociology, James Hart, said: “It was a bit gruesome in places, but really very interesting. I thought I knew the Ripper story but the tour really brought it to life.”

Sociology A level student, Savannah Mutnikas, said: “I know Brick Lane, but I saw it in a completely different light. It was a really good experience in terms of looking at how poverty links to crime.”

The tour took around 90 minutes and there was time for dinner beforehand and a bit of shopping.
