In the first of two major house events across two days, pupils in their numbers gathered in the Sports Hall for the annual House Ergo Competition, which took place on Thursday 9 February. An event full of energy and hype from spectators and competitors alike, it made for an incredible atmosphere as Houses cheered on their rowers in the various events!
The competition was split into two events with the first being an individual timed sprint. Paired competitors from each house had exactly one minute to row as far they could with their distances combined. Each house entered pairs from Years 9 to 13 for this event and the results can be found below:
House | Year 9 | Year 10 | Year 11 | Year 12 | Year 13 | Girls | Total |
Burr | 275m | 337m | 348m | 362m | 362m | 305m | 1,989m |
Welsh | 277m | 308m | 325m | 340m | 335m | 305m | 1,890m |
Orchard | 303m | 295m | 326m | 319m | 339m | 289m | 1,871m |
Everett | 269m | 311m | 318m | 341m | 359m | 267m | 1,865m |
Skipwith | 290m | 321m | 292m | 280m | 348m | 301m | 1,832m |
The second event was a relay event in which two members of each House covered the same distance, before swapping with the next pair. The rules were simple – jump on, row ten strokes, jump off, and repeat; the first House to row 2,000m would be crowned the winner. However, with Houses employing pupils to untie and tighten the foot straps for each changeover, it was clear that in order to win, Houses would have to do more than just row.
Congratulations to Burr for taking home the relay event with their winning time of 6 minutes and 42 seconds not only claiming the relay event, but making it a clean sweep victory for them across the competition. Meanwhile, behind them, there was the making of a grandstand finish for second place with Orchard pipping Everett to the line by two seconds!
The full results for the relay were:
- Burr – 6:42
- Orchard – 6:51
- Everett – 6:53
- Welsh – 7:03
- Skipwith – 7:20
With totals from the two events added together, the final standings for the 2023 House Ergo Competition, which counts towards the Baldry Trophy (which is awarded based on the results from all the House sports competitions from across the year) are:
- 1st - Burr
- 2nd - Orchard
- 3rd - Welsh
- 4th - Everett
- 5th - Skipwith
Speaking after the competition, Director of Rowing, Mr Currie, said:
‘Thank you for your participation in today’s ergo competition. As always, it raised the Sports Hall roof off! Throughout the competition, there was great house spirit demonstrated which made for a very enjoyable spectacle. The results from the competition will add to the Baldry Trophy - well done Burr House!
Good luck with the House Singing competition tomorrow afternoon (Friday 10 February); can your House sing louder than the cheering today...?’
