In the final Sports Report of the half-term, we catch up on the many football fixtures that took place across the entire College for both our boys and girls. Our girls' netball teams were in action as were our rowers who were competing at the Wycliffe Head. And, for the first time this year, our rugby sevens campaign got underway where our U16s were taking part at Gordon's School Rugby Sevens Tournament.

Girls’ 1st XI vs Magdalen College School
On Saturday 3 February, Shiplake played Magdalen College School. Although missing a couple key players, the team challenged the opposition and carried over the work from training which improved their possession of the ball throughout the game. Despite a tough first half, down 3-0, the girls began the second half with a lot of determination and quickly worked the ball into our attacking side, allowing F Lenthall to score a goal. Another outstanding performance from M Spooner in goal for the first half, and C Baxter in the second half. Well done to M Spooner for receiving Player of the Match and A Flower for receiving Players’ Player.
Final score: Shiplake College 1-4 Magdalen College School
Coaches: Miss James & Mrs Lovelock
2nd XI vs LVS Ascot
A very scrappy game, but some good contributions from R Howard and F Hawkes helped Shiplake come back from being 2-1 down.
Final score: Shiplake College 2-2 LVS Ascot
Coach: Mr Miller
2nd XI vs Magdalen College School
A very professional team performance saw Shiplake control the game from start to finish. C Nash-Steer opened the scoring after creating the chance for himself with some good footwork. S Chambers then added a second (in the second half) before R Howard completed the scoring.
Final score: Shiplake College 3-0 Magdalen College School
Player of the Match: H Kerrison
Coach: Mr Miller
3rd XI vs LVS Ascot
A hard-fought match against strong opposition, the mighty 3rds nonetheless dominated throughout and were unlucky to lose to a penalty and a rushed goal on the break. Plenty to think about and we go again!
Final score: Shiplake College 0-2 LVS Ascot
Player of the Match: J Greig-Bartram

3rd XI vs Magdalen College School
What a comeback! From 4-1 down our heroes battled back to triumph 6-4. The 'Miracle of Magdalen' was sealed by deadline day signing E Thomas with the decisive strike after an UNREAL through ball by the inexhaustible W Mason. O Palmer-Page and F Williams Jones both ruthlessly despatched braces, and S Massie grabbed the pick of the bunch with a SENSATIONAL long-range drive in our darkest moment. An incredible testimony to belief, grit and spirit!
Final score: Shiplake College 6-4 Magdalen College School

U16B vs Maiden Erlegh School
Having not played together in a competitive fixture since the beginning of January due to flooding, frost and exams, this was always going to be interesting. And so it proved to be with the side struggling to hold its shape, positional structure, and the ball! Two goals were conceded early in the game and but for the efforts of S Gallagher in goal and some last-ditch defending, this would have been a lot more. Shiplake got back into the game at the start of the second half. A fluid move through the thirds was rounded off with a clinical finish by captain B Hubbard. Unfortunately, this only served to galvanise Maiden Erlegh to go up a gear. They immediately struck back to re-establish the two-goal deficit. Following which, another 4 goals followed as their strength and power shone through. As captain Hubbard indicated in the post-match debrief, this is the benchmark from which we will improve!
Final score: Shiplake College 1-7 Maiden Erlegh School
Player of the Match: E Greenway
Coach: Mr Ellison
U16B vs Magdalen College School
A complete mismatch of a game against an outstanding under 16A team from MCS. The lads kept going through the game. GK E Greenway put his hand up to help out in goal. The score would have been double but for his efforts and those in the back line of F Baikie and G Blumfield.
Final score: Shiplake College 0-10 Magdalen College School
Player of the Match: E Greenway
Coach: Mr Ellison
U14A vs The Oratory School
What a team of young men. This team play with courage and confidence and are never afraid to keep possession of the ball. Having gone 1-0 up early on thanks to O Jomar who got on the end of a superb assist from H Biggs, we found ourselves level 10 minutes after. Within 5 passes of the restart, we were back in front. Again, O Jomar finding the back of the net at the end of a sweeping move. Unfortunately, just before the break, Oratory equalised again!
The challenge for the second half was to press high and score from a training ground corner routine and guess what? The boys only went and won the ball from pressing for D Siddiqui to score goal of the season from 30 yards out. To make things even better, S Crisford delivered a dangerous corner that was dispatched with a header from the flying H Biggs to put the game to bed.
Final score: Shiplake College 6-4 The Oratory School

U12B vs Maiden Erlegh School
Shiplake got the perfect start when G Leach converted a free kick in the area. Maiden Erlegh piled on the pressure, getting three corners and hitting the bar, but Shiplake countered when D Stewart broke free to score and minutes later, he tapped in his 2nd goal at the far post from an A Gern-Cross run.
The second half saw Maiden Erlegh bounce back to make it 3-2 and it looked like they had the momentum, until A Gern-Cross was dragged down in the box before converting his penalty. The last minutes of the game were end-to end with G Leach hitting the bar, Shiplake conceding another 2 goals and J Hunt finding the back of the net in a goal mouth scramble. After some frantic defending, A Gern-Cross sealed the win to earn himself Player of The Match.
Final score: Shiplake College 6-4 Maiden Erlegh
Player of the Match: A Gern-Cross

Netball
U18A vs Claires Court
On Wednesday 31 January, the girls U18A netball team took on Claires Court in our league match. With mocks on during the week, Shiplake were down two players resulting in a very depleted squad with only 8 players. However, they took this in their stride and knew it would have to be a full team effort if they were to secure the win. As the game started, Shiplake were up by 2 goals and maintained a lead up until the last quarter, but Claires Court managed to pull it back to 20-20 in the last 5 minutes of the final quarter. O Parkin made some amazing drives down the court, passing the ball into G Weedon to take a shot. The phenomenal defensive pressure from S Ferguson and S Pendlebury constantly turned over the ball which was rewarded with Shiplake goals. As a result, Shiplake took home a 25-20 win!
Player of The Match – O Parkin
Players’ Player – S Pendlebury
Coach’s Player – S Ferguson

U18B vs Leighton Park
On Wednesday 31 January, the U18B netball team played Leighton Park. Shiplake started with the first centre and got off to a great start. By the end of the first half, Shiplake were winning through great shooting from M Spooner and L Schoenmakers. The spirits were high, but unfortunately Leighton Park began scoring many points. Even with Shiplake's amazing defence through A Flower and L Price, Leighton Park managed to take the win with the final score of 16-9. Player of the Match went to A Flower, Players’ Player went to L Schoenmakers and Coach’s Player went to E O'Neill.

U18C vs Reddam House
On Wednesday 31 January, the U18C team played an away match against Reddam House. The match began with Reddam’s centre pass being intercepted by M Rider. The ball was quickly passed into Shiplake's attacking third with help from E Flower in centre and I Davies-Shearing playing in wing attack. The first goal of the match was scored by B Sauboua, giving Shiplake the upper hand. As the first quarter came to an end, the score was 2-1 to Reddam, but the girls remained determined to make the score even again. Shiplake had some strong defending from M Rider and S Woodeson, which allowed Shiplake to score another three goals. Unfortunately, Reddam kept on scoring in the last two quarters making the final score 23-4 to Reddam.
