With AS examinations starting in just 66 days time, the Year 12 students at Shiplake College were given a formal presentation from Mietta MacDonald, of Elevate Education, on the subject of optimising examination performance. Entitled Ace Your Exams!, Mietta delivered an enlightening session about key areas that would improve success in the exams.
Key mistakes from previous candidates were highlighted, including not leaving enough time to prepare, and not doing enough practice papers. As well as this, top tips for high achievement were brought to the table. This advice included gaining advice from teachers, fixing mistakes by identifying where marks are being lost, and carefully planning time spent in preparation, in order to make the most of the revision.
Mietta then went on to describe what to do, and what to expect, on the day of the examination. Reading and answering the question was the most important aspect of acing the exams, as well as rationing time for each question and considering all answers before putting pen to paper.
As an Australian, Mietta ensured that there were plenty of references to sport and leisure analogies, and a good measure of ‘pommie-bashing’ to lighten the mood! Mr Richard Curtis, College Housemaster and Teacher of Mathematics, said that it was a ‘very useful session and proved to be a productive afternoon for all Year 12 students, with plenty of sound advice on how to improve their chances of success this summer.’
